State orders department wide 14-day shutdown for Michigan Athletics

They were forced to play on Christmas day, partly so no one would be able to go home over the Holidays, while some Quidditch player went to the UK and potentially ruined everything.

Ridiculous.

If they were following protocols and have continued testing, and properly avoiding gatherings outside of team activities I would imagine this would be essentially the same as the nba bubble and they would be relatively safe

Yeah Iā€™m less concerned about the postponed games than I am about the fact that they wonā€™t be able to practice. Could be a big set back

Why the hā€™ canā€™t we practice? Just quarantine the whole dang team together! This makes no sense.

Bad look for the AD and athletic department that they did not have consistent COVID protocols across all sports. It is hard to comprehend that they would have some sports effectively in a bubble, but allow an athlete from another sport to travel overseas.

Obsculta: Bow to Quirinus.

Not worried about two weeks of missed practice, would take a game or two to shake off the rust if there even is any.

All these dudes have spent thousands of hours of their lives playing basketball, missing an extra 40 hours of practice shouldnā€™t have any substantial season long impact. Players miss practice and come back just fine all the time.

I would think that the university of Michiganā€™s immunology and microbiology department would have been consulted in setting up protocols for the athletic department.

So how many games are we actually going to be able to play? Only 29 days left after they come back from shut down. 11 games left and weā€™re going to need some time to practice before restarting. Seems like 3 permenantly canceled games is the absolute minimum.

Iā€™m more worried about their conditioning. Iā€™m guessing theyā€™re not going to be allowed in the facilities? You can lose a lot in two weeks.

Good season but Iā€™ll trust the experts. Public health > Penn State game.

Iā€™m obviously in shock right now but can anyone explain why MSU basketball isnā€™t getting the same treatment for having had an incredible rash of infections as well within the same state. Lots of unknowns here but if they test negative a week from now going to be a lot of justifiably angry people.

You canā€™t allow games and then shut down for infections in unrelated programs. Pause for 7-10 days sure but 14 blanket days with no practice reeks of favoritism right now.

We should probably also expect that this means the B10 regular season title is going to be out of reach.

Enough to lose the conference title they became clear favorites for.

I just hope we get to watch Franz and HD play basketball again. Iā€™m not ready for goodbye.

short story is that the UK strain of the virus appeared on some team(s) in the athletic department which is the first case of said strain in the state, so itā€™s being treated differently than MSU or any other ā€˜normalā€™ strain covid-19 infections

But why the whole program of unrelated and non intermingled students. And why not the whole campus? Or even departments they visit. This feels targeted in the moment without facts. The university needs to handle this message better if the state is jacking them around.

In a best case scenario, we can practice in a week and play the Northwestern and MSU games. Which would be reasonable to reschedule the PSU and IU games and get the whole 20 in.

If they canā€™t start practicing for 14 days, that still gives 4 days to practice before we play Illinois at home.

Does this sound like an expert decision? A health director on her first day at the job hands down this blanket stoppage to the athletic department, even though the different teams arenā€™t interacting with each other, while permitting the university to carry on business as usual.
