State orders department wide 14-day shutdown for Michigan Athletics

I’m guessing because they only broadcast college basketball on weekends, at specific hours. ESPN broadcasts them all the time and has its whole family of networks.

CBS pays to have the first pick of games. And CBS has a Sunday afternoon time slot for that game. If you move it to Saturday, you have to put a different game on CBS… one that might be less desirable.

I heartily second this, and know for myself that here deep into the virus my response to almost any new news tends to be a deep groan and general universal complaint. It’s like anything: Break it down into tasks and deal with them one by one.

JMO, but it sure looks to me like they absolutely have had discussions – they’ve set broad priorities, as BQ has confirmed. What they say in public isn’t the same as what they do in private. They said the same in thing in early December in the days leading up to Michigan cancelling the OSU game, but I’m wary of believing that. In that case Gene Smith and Ryan Day had already gone on the public record stating their preference and saying they had made that preference clear to the league.

Obviously the two situations are so different, given the nature of the sports, but I don’t know that there’ s a reason to believe they haven’t at least sketched out a few basic scenarios they believe are feasible and fair. So, going by that, I’m guessing they make up 3 of the at this point 5 games missed: Indiana, Sparty and Illinois. They’ll pass on Northwestern and Nebraska rematches.

I think you meant to include PSU in the pass column instead of Neb. We already played our one game against Neb for this year. Also Mich has no say in who they play. B1G makes the decision.

You’re right – PSU, not Nebraska.

Personally, I don’t believe Michigan has no say. The conference didn’t decide to play football in the fall without the schools involved in a formal process there. School executives had input and then they voted. Likewise, OSU wasn’t in the conference championship because conference execs decided that on their own, independent of anything OSU said or did. I don’t know what has to be voted on and what is entrusted to the conference to just decide and how input is sought, but Michigan’s athletic department can and should advocate on behalf of its athletes and expect that the conference and the university administrators around the table will pick up the phone when somebody calls to do that.

To anyone who knows.
Why is the Thurs womens bbl game with Purdue being played while mens Illinois game is not.

Honestly, probably because PU isn’t very good (6-8 overall and 3-7 B1G) so we feel like it’s a good first game back.

For the men, Illinois is clearly looking like the second best team in the league so that game could play a huge role in the title race.

Yeah I do think if we were scheduled to play Northwestern or something like that we would be playing. The fact it’s Illinois and a game that will go a long ways to determining the title makes it better to push it later once we have shaken off the rust.

It does seem to be bogus for Illinois that we are allowed to do that.

Well, is it fair to Michigan to be forced to not practice for two weeks and then have to play Illinois right after?

No idea on the differences but I believe the WBB had already lost some games due to postponement.

Yes, looks like they had three games postponed before the two-week shutdown.

Dylan any confirmation on a full-go practice today or yesterday?

Yeah, I’m feeling like something there should be some kind of statement from the AD one way or the other.

What statement are you guys looking for? They put out a statement about the Illinois game.

Here’s a snippet from the website:

On Thursday, Feb. 4, U-M Athletics began resuming injury-prevention activities and sports-specific training for many of the student-athletes. This safe and phased re-acclimatization schedule was developed in collaboration with the state, county and U-M medical experts to prepare for a return to organized practices in anticipation of resuming competition on a sport-by-sport basis the following week.

The University of Michigan and Illinois athletic departments, and the Big Ten Conference announced U-M’s game with Illinois on Thursday (Feb. 11) at Crisler Center has been postponed as part of the Wolverines’ return-to-play planning following the program’s pause.

They are in the process of their return-to-play protocol which is on track for Sunday’s game at Wisconsin to happen.

You feel no need? Not curious about any elements of this?

I’m just saying they’ve put out statements. I’m just curious what official communication you’d want to see?

Obviously, it’d be great from my POV if they were openly communicating and having daily press conferences but that’s clearly not the situation. And I’m also not really sure what would be said.

Maybe a tweet with some practice pics that would otherwise be considered generic but means we’re back to it.

Though maybe the reason to not do that would be to keep the noise from Illinois down.

The statement above said “On Thursday, Feb. 4, U-M Athletics began resuming injury-prevention activities and sports-specific training for many of the student-athletes.”

Michigan has been back working out since Thursday. I’m sure there are different levels of separation, etc. I would guess they are keeping as much extra staff out of the gym as possible so probably not a ton on social media.
