Well, that makes more sense than just an AD shutdown. Confirms that the teams will not be resuming any earlier than that.
Letās all cross our fingers that no one on the team tests positive later this year leading to another shut down.
My hope is that there is no B1G Tourney and they use tourney week as a way to fill in missed games.
Iām reffing HS ball right now and thereās no State/Fed requirements for how to enforce mask wearing on the court. Our town has required mask wearing indoors, so players/coaches/refs are all masked up. Weāve decided internally in our officials association, and talked with ADās about this, to tell 1st time violators to pull up their mask & the 2nd time is a substitution. So basically treating this like an equipment malfunction, similar to player who doesnāt tuck in their jersey. Everyone at this level is doing their best to get the kids out there playing. Itās hard to communicate with masks on, so you end up violating the 6-foot distance for better volume/clarity - hoping that the other person doesnāt remove their mask. Especially need to talk with our less experienced officials during stoppages in the game to lend an ear, keep their confidence up. The mask/distance violations happening at College & NBA level seem to be a result of operating in a mixed-mask environment. Difficult to blame a coach for letting nose drop down when the players have been running around for 2 hours with no masks.
@JDOg How are you finding working while masked up? Is your breathing more labored than without a mask? What happens to your whistle when you spit it out after making a call? Does it end up in your way when youāre reporting to the table? So many questions.
Had our first games last week, and I bought a Smitty mask - which is basically a little bulgie in front - and wore whistle underneath. Tight quarters, gotta bite down on whistle so canāt really talk thru gritted teeth. Iām a sweating fool, so Iām carrying a handkerchief in my back pocket for wiping down around the face area. But itās hot and uncomfortable, but I can breath fine. Waiting on the Fox 40 whistle mask to arrive before this weekendās games. This one looks goofy, but a couple guys wore them last week and said they worked great. Weāve termed them āravenās beakā masks The electronic whistles are too quiet, that was my go to Plan A before we tested them in the gym on Day 1 and they failed.
All hand signals at the table, going back to the old mechanic of āpointing at the team benchā when reporting fouls. The ravens beak mask should help to talk by having that pouch to catch the whistle.
The Fox 40 masks must be the ones we see a few of the D1 guys wearing. They do look pretty beaky.
four days later?
I still donāt fully get the reason anyone needs to take a mask down while yelling. Granted, Iām not having that many daily conversations with masked people (mostly just at photo gigs, Trader Joeās, or when I go to physical therapy) but Iāve never had trouble hearing someone. I havenāt shot a menās game this season at Crisler but I can tell you that the piped-in noise isnāt that loud for the womenās games.
Maybe itās just habit to pull it off?
FWIW:
That would at least leave 3 or 4 days of practice for the Illinois game.
I am glad that this order is spreading beyond just the AD because it seems like a more feasible way to āstop the spreadā around campus. I feel like this is common sense, but Iāll just add from the perspective of a student living in Ann Arbor, the enforcement of these orders has essentially been 0. There are the caveats of being able to attend in-person coursework and research and then no enforcement (for the sake of their businesses being able to stay open, of course) by local restaurants, etc (I am not trying to make a point about that). To me, student life does seem quieter than last semester, I am sure dorm closures and the weather being largely to blame. Last semester on campus asymptomatic testing was limited to those in the āCommunity Sampling and Testing Programā, but has been expanded to campus-wide, weekly access which seems like a good improvement. Those things to me seem hopeful for minimizing huge outbreaks and letting sports begin again soon-ish, along with the trickle (albeit slow) of vaccinations. This is all to say that from a student here, the campus-wide orders weāve received are more like suggestions than orders, but at least they make people aware that they need to be extra careful because of the variant. Additionally, I think this does add legitimacy to the AD shutdown, but seems to me like an early ātest out of quarantineā seems unlikely.
Someone stated earlier on this thread that after 2 wk layoff would call for another training camp. That is complete bs. Ask Sparty or Villanova or PSU. They were off longer than 2 wks. Canāt remember which team but one D1 team only had one practice before playing a game after being shut down.
A lot of teams (I know MSU for example) were able to have individual workouts during that time. Not sure if the specifics and Iām sure others have been shut out of the gym but every situation is different.
I doubt theyāll be back at it February 7th. Worse yet what if this team has an ACTUAL positive test after this? Iād be worried about the remainder of the season at that point. The powers that be shut down the team with zero positives or exposure, imagine what theyāll do if there is an actual covid positive
This seems different than the MSU shutdown since itās department and campus wide and ordered by the state. I would guess no one is allowed in any of the athletic buildings right now
Yes ā I was replying to a comment that other teams have been off longer than two weeks. You canāt really compare MSUās time off because theyāve been able to get in the gym. Michigan has not been able to go anywhere.
As I havenāt seen or read the isolation (variant version) protocols for Michiganās MBB, does anyone know if the players or coaching staff can leave their rooms period?
If they canāt, does the AD deliver prepared meals? Did the AD deliver treadmills to each room?
Per the WCHD order dated today:
āStudents are permitted to leave their residence only to participate in limited activities, including in-person classes, work or research that cannot be completed remotely, obtaining food and medical care and other approved activities.ā
Does this pertain to student athletes? Or is there a more stringent protocol for student athletes?
