Blackmon arrrggghhhh. He was such a perfect fit for us and he ends up with Crean. Boooo
I see Jalen Rose, Brian Shaw, Steve Smith and Greivis Vasquez all Tall PGs. In Beilein system he may be forced to play out of position, but that doesnt make him a 4. In Beilein System Trey Burke/Zak Irvin would be Guards playing out of position at the 4.
You do realize a guy like Lebron James plays the 4?
Blackmon arrrggghhhh. He was such a perfect fit for us and he ends up with Crean. Boooo
Yeah. Of all of the guys we were recruiting, he was the one guy I was hoping we could somehow land.
His lack of foot speed and overall athleticism is why I laugh at the idea of him at the 1 or 2. He is a point forward in the mold of Kyle Anderson, Tayshaun Prince, Lamar Odom, Hedo Turkgolu or Draymond Green. Hopefully he gets to 6'9'' so I can throw in James Worthy and Sam Perkins, too.
I agree about the point forward comparisons (minus Green, not sure he fits there). From what I saw Chatman’s got the offensive game to play a guard position, but I think (right now) he’d be a defensive liability trying to guard quick 1s and 2s. I see his role as the 6th man backing up the 2-4 for the upcoming year.
Kam Chatman is a 6'8 Guard people. Why you guys continue to try to place him at the 4 is Hilarious. He has the same build as Jalen Rose.
The on,y thing Chatman has in common with Rose at this stage of comparison is that he’s left handed, that’s it! His frame is significant larger and looks to easily be able to put on 10-15 added lbs. of muscle and definition. He will probably be around 220 at some point in year two. He has no chance of being a 1or 2 in our system. He has limited foot speed and couldn’t possible guard either position. He does however project to be a possibly great point forward because of his passing ability, with the possibility of playing the 4 as well, as he matures. Jalen Rose was stick thin coming out if HS with a tiny rail thin frame, nothing like Kam. Guestavo has him pegged right IMO.
??? A defensive Liability trying to Guard quick 1s and 2s?? He is not Strong enough to check a 4!! At the 1 or 2 he creates more of a mismatch for our opponents. And he is not the size of Lebron and I doubt if he will ever be. At max I could see him at the weight of say, Walt Wizard Williams! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RRbrewlFx3E

I question if you’ve been watching Michigan basketball these last few years if you don’t think he’ll be playing some 4.
I really dont think he will man the 4. We Have Donnal and even Wilson to man the 4. Me I go big at some time. I would run Chatman at 1 Wilson at 2 foot speed be damned… And what does that even mean? And how does one pick up on that with the limited highlight film available? Too slow? Seems to have work just fine for UCLA Kyle Anderson.
Love your optimism. But chatman at the 1 and Wilson at the 2? Are you serious?
Skill and athleticism aside, I don’t see Beilien ever playing a lineup that big. I could see Chatman getting some time at what amounts to a second SG, and Wilson being a 3/4 with one other big out there, but that’s about as far as I’d go.

Did you watch the Jordan Brand game? I just can’t see Chatman staying in front of quick 1s and 2s - which was the Achilles heal of our defense all season. I think he’d do fine offensively, he would just get torched defensively. Albeit, I do think that given some time in our S&C program, things may look different.
And c’mon, Zak Irvin manned the 4 a few times this year, so I don’t think Coach B would have a problem putting a 6’ 8" 220 pound player there. Anyway, I’m sticking to my prediction that Kam will be our 6th man, and get some good minutes playing the 2-4 as needed (or as matchups decide).
I just don’t see Donnal playing the 4 at all next season. I don’t think he can guard the postition any better than Kam could guard the 1 or 2. Also besides shooting I don’t think he has the perimeter skills.
Also Kam is on record multiple times saying he was recruited specifically to fill GR3’s role. He may move to the 3 eventually when Wilson can take over full time at the 4 but next year Kam will be the starter at the position.

I agree with Sven. Kam is your prototypical 4 for JB. I actually think Kam has the potential to be better than GRIII at UM because we can actually run some of the offense through Kam and Kam will almost certainly be a better rebounder. Nobody thought Burke would be better than Darius just like nobody thought Caris would be better than Hardaway. It wouldn’t shock me in the slightest if Kam has a better freshman year than GRIII did.
I also don’t see Donnal at the 4 unless McGary comes back then obviously Donnal will see some 4 just so he can get some more PT.
If MAAR can contribute 10 productive minutes per game next year and MM returns, we could have another special season.
I agree that I don’t see Donnal getting much time (if any) at the 4 next season, but I’m OK with that. Beilein and the coaches have talked a lot about a “roadmap” for player development with the media before. I would anticipate the plan right now is to have Mark play at the 5 and then possibly transition to the 4 down the line more after expanding his skillset. It’s crazy to think that we still have only seen 2/3 of the 2013 class play thus far.

Just cuz he’s the 1 or 2 on offense doesn’t mean he has to guard a 1 or 2 on defense. If we have Irvin at the 4 on offense, and Kam running point or the 2, he can still guard the opponent’s 4 on the other end and Irvin can guard the opponent’s guard. Not saying that’s what’s going to happen, but you don’t have to check the same guy that is guarding you or the technical positional equivalent on the opposing side.

This is true. Yet there are a still a finite number of positions, and I just see Walton at the 1, Caris at the 2, Irvin at the 3 in 2014-2015 (with the 2 and 3 somewhat interchangeable). In 2015-2016 I still see Walton at the 1, with Irvin and Chatman at the 2 and 3 positions (still somewhat interchangeable…I think eventually Chatman runs offense through him like the aforementioned point forward). With that being said, I think you’ll see Chatman with some guard-like opportunities no matter where he sets up…especially since it’s Beilein’s offense we’re talking about.
