The two kinds of online football fans:
If anyone can get us there it is Jim but of the complainers there are a couple of things I do think are concerning.
- I can stomach losing to Wisky but our guys looked defeated in a way that surprised me.
- I want the old Jim back. Fire and all. That was our guy.
But I believe in him and the kids to get it right. I didnât think we were as strong this year as last so 2 - 1 after Wisconsin isnât the end of the world for me.
A possible third option. The fan who is watching the football game, but only can see this:
OH, GIVE ME SOME UM HOOPSâŚgoing through withdrawal! The team will be top ten in the B1GâŚthese dogs know how to fight. Iâll take a senior PG and C with a solid 3/4 junior any year! This is not the year to over coach, they have enough pieces.
GO BLUE!
In the recent past thereâs often been Beilein-based excitement to distract from football pain. This year we need it more than ever, and itâs just Howard questionmarks. Jim failing is a reminder that we canât just pencil in Howard for success, frustrating as that may be. Letâs just hope whatever Michigan Football version of the Curse of Bobby Lane will still be irrelevant to basketball.
I agree that we canât pencil in Howard for success, but also believe that we cannot pencil anything in for Howard as of yet. Itâs pretty clear after reading numerous chapters of Harbaughâs book that itâs a pretty dull, repetitive read. At the very least, Howardâs book hasnât been opened yet, and itâll be worth checking out for a chapter or two.
Top 10 in the Big 10? I hope so.
Iâm probably in the minority, but I am always really excited for basketball season. Even during the Decade of Darkness, I was excited to watch Michigan hit the hardwood. Michigan basketball is my first sports love, so it is always the season I look forward to the most.
No real point in trying to debate a true believer like you. You will continue see everything through those maize and blue glasses and ignore evidence to the contrary.
And, despite one national championship in seventy years, youâll be one of those fans calling for the coachâs head every time we donât have an undefeated season or beat Ohio State.
Iâm not saying Iâm super happy with Harbaugh, and clearly this season is a disappointment thus far (and probably will be all year).
It was not long ago that we were losing to Toledo (Rod) and Rutgers (Hoke), and getting physically humiliated every time we played Sparty. But hey, itâs real simple, we just find a new coach and all will be fine. Let me know who your guy is. I think we both know Lincoln Riley isnât coming no matter how much money we offer.
I will take the same approach I did when our basketball program struggled a bit. It is up to the coaches and players to adapt and figure it out. Yeah there will be some negativity and whining. But there is nothing I can do but support them and root them on.
At this point Iâd take a guy who is going to just do the basic work of building a program and coaching the fine-detail fundamentals. The Iowa State coach, perhaps. Joe Morehead. Mike Leach is a maybe/maybe not. Itâs not that hard to find a bright young coordinator and interview the heck out of him to see if he can do the CEO-type tasks and identify folks on the side of the ball he does not specialize in.
Or, wait a year and hire whomever is Urban Meyerâs offensive coordinator at USC. Hiring Urban Meyerâs OC is almost never a bad decision.
IMO, the risk-reward is worth it. An average Michigan fan will never be happy unless the program is at the point where itâs atleast winning a B10 title very 4ish years. There isnât much value gained in between a 6-6 Michigan team and a 9-3 Michigan team.
But thereâs a ton to lose when you hire the wrong guy and you end up losing to teams like Rutgers and Toledo. That can happen.
We would have two Big Ten titles under Harbaugh without Urban Meyer at Ohio State, and we came damn close in 2016.
Theyâre at a different level right now, but letâs not pretend it happened overnight. Lloyd Carr was 1-6 against Tressel. Rod and Hoke were 1-6 against OSU, with the one win coming against Luke Fickell.
Urban was 84-9 overall, with only 5 Big Ten losses in 7 years. Thatâs just simply at a different level than any OSU team weâve faced since the days of Woody Hayes.
I just donât want to be where Tennessee is and I donât want to reach the depths of the Hoke and Rodriguez years. Going 5-7 is unacceptable here. Letâs see where Harbaugh takes the rest of the season. At home against Iowa is likely going to be a big game in terms of hope for the rest of the season. If we win that then we could be 5-1 heading into Penn State and thereâs hope. If not, look out.
If anyone thinks Mike Leach would even get an interview at Michigan. . .
Mentioning his name is probably a bannable offense.
Yeah, we think RichRod was a culture clash?
I think the main reason he wonât be fired is to avoid the pressure and deep embarassment of a campaign to hire Urban Meyer. I support that reasoning. That scenario is just rubbing our noses in it.
LA Wolverine offers a host of pretty obvious reasons above. That doesnât mean that Harbaughâs around forever, but heâll have next year to turn it around and would likely walk before he was pushed.
