Off Topic: 2019 Michigan Football

I know your’re not the first person to mention the money and I’m not the first person to push back, but the money doesn’t matter. I know that sounds insane, but it doesn’t. If he wins he’s worth it, if he falls short of expectations, he isn’t worth it.

Was Brady Hoke worth his contract?

Was it worth the money Michigan saved by not paying the money to bring Rich Rod’s defensive coordinator from West Virginia?

I just don’t think the expectation in 5 years of Harbaugh was “0-5 against OSU, no title game appearances”.

I agree he should not be fired. I think acting like people are unreasonable for being upset is a bit much.

Valid. I have no problem with folks who are upset or disappointed. I’m just upset with the inability thus far to get over the proverbial hump (aka beating Ohio State). I’m not upset about the money, the foreign trips, the satellite camps, the overnight stay at the backup kicker’s house or anything else others try to throw out there for clicks or ratings.

Exactly. Our athletic department prints money.

Upset, cool. Hysterical? Days later? Your choice. But if you’re feeding into the piranha-like frenzy of a national media that’s pretty obviously antagonistic to Michigan and Harbaugh. . . worth thinking through. There’s a herd element here, IMO. But LAWolverine has made a pretty complete case; I’ll bow out.

I think there’s been some very good coverage this week that hasn’t been hysterical or clickbaity or anti-Michigan. Lots of crappy hot takes on twitter, but we are spoiled as fans to have a range of beat writers who provide thoughtful takes and solid anonymous-quote content that comes from the right place. The coverage of Michigan sports is a lot better than the coverage of many, many things right here and now, IMO.

Well, looks like Harbaugh has fixed everything and you were all overreacting. I’m excited to run the table and get some revenge against Wisconsin in the Big 10 title game!

In the Big 10 it’ll be very tough to beat the Tim Brewster era at Minnesota.

I mean, he won 3 games in conference twice. And even made a bowl game. He sucked but Ash has Rutgers at pre-Schiano levels

Minnesota was actually a pretty decent program with Glen Mason before Brewster got there. Living in the market it was just unbelievable to me to see how poor that team played week after week. Brewster’s arrogance didn’t help his cause either.

Finally, a game that gives me the satisfaction that I so deserve. I’ll be puffing my chest out well into the coming week, and rightly so. Patterson hitting these talented receivers could cause Iowa some problems. Keep Gattis on the field for the remainder of the season, please.

Iowa is a huge game. Win that one and we’re likely 5-1 heading into Penn State. You just know that game is going to be scheduled as a night game and they’ll do a white out.

Rutgers is firing Ash today.

The talk has been that it’s going to be Fox’s game of the week. If true, that means it will be a noon game.

That’s what I’ve heard as well. Unfortunate if true, as I’ll be in state college for the game.

I knew before you even responded that you would point to the worst decade of Michigan football in modern history as if it was some kind of accomplishment for Harbaugh to top that. But you actually went beyond that an included the worst part of Lloyd’s career for good measure. Way to set the bar high.

I’m guessing you are super pumped that they beat Rutgers. They are back!

And you would harken back to what, the 1970s and say that if we were great then, we should be great now? When it comes to OSU, how can you possibly just ignore the fact that the trend was 2-12 before Harbaugh ever arrived? They’re coached by one of the all-time greats, and you think it’s a huge failing we didn’t beat him when he lost 5 Big Ten games in 7 years. Laughable.

You continue to ignore the obvious - the reason why we haven’t won the conference championship under Harbaugh (frankly, twice in four years) is that OSU had Urban Meyer.

The 1990-2004 run was accomplished with John Cooper coaching the Buckeyes for all but one of those titles.

Carr had PLENTY of talent at his disposal from 2001-2007, when he went 1-6 against Tressel.

And then the next two coaches went 1-6 against Tressel and Meyer. In 2014, Hoke went 5-7 while Urban won a national championship, beating Saban and Alabama in the semifinal game. That’s what Harbaugh walked into.

During the seven years of Rich Rod and Hoke, we were 46-42. OSU was 77-16 during those years, and that included one 6-7 interim season under Fickell. Take that away and they’re 71-9.

Yet, you’re going to fault Harbaugh for not beating them in his first four years? (And really, we had them beat in year two, unless you think the spot was correct).

Even better, you think there’s another coach out there who could do better. Who? And it’s a total cop out (not you) to say, “I don’t know who,” because you don’t replace a coach with all that comes with it unless there are clearly better candidates out there.

I think you are severely underestimating the magnitude of the challenge Harbaugh faced with OSU and the substantial risk of getting a worse coach if we made a change.

Putting numbers to the debate. Harbaugh’s got Michigan back to where they were (great, but not elite)…

He does not have Michigan back to being great. Great would imply we are winning B1G championships and beating OSU. Still a step below that.
