Michigan Players in the NBA

Well right now he’s on an NBA team, which is what NBA players do…

I knew someone was going to make a smart comment like that. All I’m saying is that in a vacuum, Tacko is not one of the 450 best players in the world. There are better players on European rosters that actually get playing time, etc. He’s more of a meme player in my eyes, similar to Brian Scalabrine, probably why the Celtics want him on their team.

If there are better players on European rosters that would get PT, then why aren’t they in the NBA considering NBA has a lot of foreign players in this league? The fact that Tacko is playing in his 2nd year in the NBA says a lot about his skill level as a player. There are a quite a few 7’1" to 7’6" players never made the NBA roster to say that he’s not good is being disingenuous to Tacko. He went undrafted and went through the G-League to making a roster. There are tons of players who has never had a shot of making the roster in the NBA.

Fair description.

Just because it is a game I watched - Tim Hardaway had 6 points down the stretch (including a 3 that stretched the lead to 7) of the Mavs’ 4 point win over a mostly-loaded (Durant and Kyrie played over 35 minutes) Nets team. Tim scored 23 on 16 shots.

I will not mention Trey’s game.

Caris also had 31 on 20 shots (41 minutes!) and 12 assists in a win over a solid Hawks team. Apparently he scored 9 in the final 2 minutes, and had a “dagger” and-1.

Watched it as well. Trey missed a bunch of bunnies, pretty frustrating to watch.

I would NORMALLY agree with your argument here, but the Celtics do a ton of promotions and marketing involving Tacko because he is extremely personable, and people are fascinated with his sheer size. With the expanded rosters this year, I think it’s worth it, possibly, to keep a guy around as a marketing gimick.

Yeah, woof. Honestly, his (in)ability to hit bunnies has mostly been his largest professional hindrance.

Gotta have one of these guys on the roster for the annual Growth Chart giveaway.

When the Pistons signed Boban, I thought he was just going to be another Chuck Nevitt. He gets fairly regular minutes now. So Tacko could find a niche.

I think that’s the clear comp based on size alone, but Boban is an actual basketball player. He can shoot and has a fairly high BBIQ.

Also, how many Goldfish cracker commercials has Tacko Fall been in?

There’s a niche for Tacko. He’s a good rim protector and can rebound. His advanced stats are actually pretty good. His PER and PIE would’ve been top 5 in the league if he had qualified which is the same thing with Boban.

Tacko literally has never played a meaningful minute, right? Those stats are irrelevant. He hasn’t even played 200 minutes. Boban has actual skill and he still can’t stay on the floor. Tacko is a poor man’s Boban

Yeah to the point of comparison Boban was brought into the league because he scored 16 ppg in 20 mins for a Euroleague team that finished middle of the pack - ie, the highest possible level outside of the NBA. He was, literally, one of those guys who was out of the NBA who was better than NBA players.

It’s natural to compare Boban to other super tall players, but I think he’s the NBA version of Austin Davis. They’re both very hard to stop from scoring in the post, have no other real skills and are major liabilities on defense. They’re capable of giving you a few good minutes or exploiting some matchups.

I like the reverse comparison here. What are some other Michigan Player comparisons for NBA players? Joel Embiid for example – kind of a right-handed Hunter Dickinson there, isn’t he?

Anthony Davis is a poor man’s Brandon Johns.

If you squint hard enough at Adrien Nunez, you can see Klay Thompson

I think you’re right about Davis – he definitely reminds me of what Johns is slated to become.

I’m squinting so hard that my eyes are closed.
