Jaylen Brown - Will Likely Use OV for UM

I don’t think we are looking at Towns any longer. It doesn’t seem that way at least right now. I’d also stop wasting my time with Battle and Langford. That isn’t happening. We need to move on to the second and third tier kids and lock them up now before they blow up or commit somewhere else.

Dude, Battle visits on May 8. How about we at least wait that long to keep recruiting him…

I’m hoping this may swing Swanigans decision and he flips to Cal as well. Would love to see Hizzo cry and complain Ha Ha…

OK, I think I’ve come up with a solution to our recruiting problems. It’s obvious to anyone who follows Michigan Basketball that John Beilein is just an old white guy from upstate New York, and while he’s a man of great honesty and integrity who is squeaky clean, he just can’t relate with today’s elite basketball talent. In addition to that he’s a lousy salesman who would prefer to tell kids the truth than to fill their heads with hype that might somehow entice them to come to play for a high character guy like him in a program where they’re actually expected to go to class. He also handcuffs his assistants and is just to old to ever learn anything new. So the solution is that we must get rid of JB! My proposal would be that a select group of posters from this forum go to Jim Hackett with the charge that Coach Beilein be removed and that they be named the Michigan Basketball Coach/Recruiter Selection Team. A couple of these guys might even be considered for the position as the next Michigan Basketball Coach/Recruiter. Lord knows these guys are far more qualified for the job than Coach B. Once put in charge these guys could either find a coach, or even better, be the coach, who would instantly relate with elite talent from all over the country, make Michigan “cool” again, and sell, sell, sell! Yep, I think that’s the solution! OK, have at it, I’m ready for the criticism that is about to “rain down upon me!”

So what’s the “reason?”

I believe that Langford’s dad has said that they will visit Michigan again.

If there was any stop that was not pulled out for Brown, they have another chance to pull it out for Langford.

Guaranteed position, guarantee starting spot, guarantee 40 minutes, hang sessions with Jalen Rose, whatever, just do it.

I just want these 2016 recruits to commit early so we know what we getting, and not drag it out until may first like JB

Closing this thread… but one final thing. This was all about the Shareef Abdur-Rahim connection with Cal and it got the job done. That’s how recruiting works.

I am somewhat surprised about the meltdown here. Especially since some that are reacting so negatively from this are some that didn't get their hopes up on Brown.

I don’t feel any differently about JB and Co today than before Brown committed to Cal. We’ve tried to go after the big guns. Hasn’t worked out for us. I think what we need to do is widen our net a bit, go after guys HARD early on, try to get an early commitment. Get guys that have pretty high ceilings. It worked with GR3, Nik, DMo etc. We aren’t going to win recruiting battles for the big guns straight up. We need something on our side - relationships (like McGary with Novak) or early, comfortable relationships and early commitments (like GR3, Irvin). If we’re not going to get the top top guys, we need to really focus on the guys we can get and fit with us. That doesn’t necessarily mean these are guys that can’t take us to a high level.

I’m not worked up over Brown. He went to Cal. He had a relationship with Shareef Abdur Rahim, who is a Cal alum. Worked out similar for Cal as McGary did with us. It happens shrug.

Early identification and relationships won’t always work (Kennard, Booker). But it should help. We should have a good season next year. Not an elite one, but a good one. And you never know what can happen when you get out of that first weekend in the tourney (see MSU this year, Wichita St, Uconn etc). If we miss out on Langford or Battle, we need to go hard after Jefferson, Daniels or someone else else on our radar that can ball. Some are acting like losing Brown is some sort of death blow for this program. There is still time for the 2016 class. Is there a higher sense of urgency? Sure. And I’m sure that will be reflected in our staffs effort on the recruiting trail.

Losing him to Cal hurts more IMO than if he went to UK.

Furthermore, with Kenny Williams dropping us, that also adds fuel to the fire.

2 years ago, if you would have outlined a worst case scenario for 2015’s recruiting class, it would look something similar to what has transpired, this being possibly worse.

Williams chose to stay home with his first commitment. He’s down to UNC and UVA…hmmmmm. Besides, he was only an option late in the game. And he was a luxury IMO. He may not have even cracked the lineup this year. If we get Huerter in 16, fine with me. He’s a downgrade from Williams in shooting ability, but an upgrade in passing and handling ability (still important to get a PG in addition though).

Brown chose Cal with a ton of help from a mentor during the recruiting process. And his recruitment has always been weird and quiet. I don’t know why there’s a meltdown. I was prepared for this.

And even if this is the worst case scenario, we’ve got a solid roster for this upcoming season. And there’s still plenty of time for the 2016 class to be good.

2015 class was not an apocalyptic disaster. It’s just not what people wanted. Don’t think it’s above criticism (think dropping Coleman for Robinson was weird). But it’s not a doomsday.

Two lessons that shouldn’t need to be re-emphasized, but that the Jaylen Brown episode has:

Crystal-ballers don’t know fucking shit. They just don’t. They guess. A lot. And they ones who guess right pretend like they actually knew something.

Landing elite, top 10, one-and-done recruits that top-tier schools are in the mix for is going to be a very rare occurrence for Michigan basketball. It just is. Just as landing elite, top 10 recruits in football is going to be very rare if not unheard of for programs like Duke, Kentucky, Kansas, Louisville and Arizona. This should not be news to anyone here, and wishing and needing for it be otherwise changes nothing. So can we please stop whining about it like a bunch of pussies, and focus on what we can and do get, and what we do with it? In the end, coaching is what really matters…player development and managing the game on the floor. Wisconsin basketball fans aren’t all pissy about not getting top 10 recruits. Neither are fans from Gonzaga, Wichita State, Iowa State or Virginia. And yet those programs are back in the top 25 year after year after year. Did you see Sparty football fans melting down because Dantonio wasn’t recruiting as well as Hoke?
