I for one am happy to avoid all the prima donna drama
3 of the 7 kids signed in Pennyâs first class were from Memphis ⌠and kids Penny had a pre-existing relationship with from his time on the high school/AAU circuit. Including Wiseman, the nationâs #1 recruit.
Pennyâs first class would be more akin to Juwan landing his son, Jett, plus Bronny James, and a couple of their friends for his first recruiting class.
And apparently kids Penny personally paid to bring to Memphis.
I agree with the comment earlier that Xâs drop some on defense was due to his increase in muscle mass effecting his quickness.
Todd could get eaten up in the g league, heâd be better off going the bazley route IMO. NBA loves the unknown.
Yeah I really donât think thatâs a good idea for him. But maybe scouts wonât care if he gets killed?
I think theyâll care. Todd doesnât know that heâd get killed though
Is it really much different than arguing for the one and done rule to go away then?
I think the difference is that G-League teams have no incentive to feature you or develop you when you are on a G-League Select deal because you are going to the draft anyway.
Isnât the whole point of these deals to draw eyeballs? So Iâd imagine itâd be owner mandated, particularly since thereâs barely any investment in most of these G-League players. If the 12th man on a G League team gets screwed out of playing time in order to showcase a teenager whoâs not ready, it doesnât change much for the G League owner.
G-league teams are ran on tight budgets too, the strength training and nutrition is no where near what it is at top college programs.
The should have a separate âg-league selectâ team, that way the incentives arenât misaligned
Probably something they would want to do but Iâm not sure they have the volume.
On the whole, I think this is all a terrible decision by Todd. Whatever, itâs his problem now.
Best shot at just what?
I think if a guy is going to commit to a G-League season and sign a select contract they should be eligible for the draft right away on the condition that theyâll play their entire first season in the G-League. This way at least theyâll be going to a team that has an interest in developing them properly.
Jeez I didnât proofread that at all, my bad.
I meant that Toddâs best shot at making it to the NBA wouldâve been through college, specifically UM. He would have been able to play through his mistakes here as a highly recruited 5 star, and because a focus of Juwan definitely wouldâve been to get him to the league. Going overseas, I think he runs the risk of barely playing with/against better competition, and if he does play, he runs the risk of looking like he doesnât belong in the pros. Thereâs also not much incentive from a pro coach to play him through his mistakes knowing that his intention isnât to stay.
Going overseas may have made sense for a guy like Christopher, who is definitely more pro-ready, but I think itâs a mistake for Todd that he doesnât realize.
Honestly, I think the roster construction here made Toddâs time in Ann Arbor pretty fraught with danger, especially if his priority was only being here for one year. I think everyone on this site that penned a âhereâs my rotation for next yearâ is familiar with why. Obviously, Isaiah Liversâ decision weighs pretty heavily here.
