Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

If a guy is negotiating hard on omitting a buyout, then you know he is not long for the job. Questionable to give him a big raise under the circumstances.

What’s your play as the AD then? Say, ā€œBeilein won’t accept a buyout so I don’t think he’s going to be here long term so we’re not going to do an extension.ā€ At that point the public opinion becomes that Warde couldn’t keep Beilein happy and was trying to drive him out.

I didn’t say no extension, but Manuel could’ve used the buyout issue to probe Beilein’s commitment to staying. Anyways, the more serious issue is that Manuel seems to have stuck his head in the sand on May 1 when he heard JB was in NBA talks. He should have fired up the search effort right then and there, skipped the football trip if need be. Instead he sat on his hands for 10 days and then comes out with this stuff about having a short-list developed last year (I don’t believe it).

I’m surprised so many people are trying to place blame or say ā€œso and so should’ve done thisā€ and we wouldn’t be in this situation. I mean, it’s pretty apparent to me that this was going to happen no matter who was on vacation or what contract was negotiated the year beore. Beilein has interest in coaching in the NBA, he’s 66, and this is his last good chance.

Now, if you want to argue that maybe if Warde had been in more consistent communication with Beilein he would’ve had a heads up…but, the assistant coaches/players and other people intimate with the program had little to no advance notice. This happened fast. And for whatever reason Beilein kept it under wraps.

Buyouts are typically clauses that are focuses when contracts are being drafted. There is give and take. For example less front end money may be offered in exchange for a lower buyout.

Beilein was incensed when he realized that he had to pay WVU when he decided to leave. Each check he cut to them had ā€œunder protestā€ in the memo line. I understood completely his protest, at least in principle.

Coming off the dalliance with the Pistons, both parties knew that he would likely bolt to the nba as soon as the right offer came.

This was a situation where a buyout would not have been anything other than illusion.

In every negotiation you have to know when you are in a position of strength and when not. When JB got his new contract and extension he was 100% in the position of strength and everyone at the table knew it. There was not going to be a buy out plain and simple, do we cut bait back then because it was not going to happen or take not of it and keep a short list of candidates if he does leave?

Sounds like Warde did the right things in signing and putting together a list. Now will we the fans like or agree with the list? Thats the question… and will the new hire help usher in a new regime without a drastic fall off in the program? That is the hope of every fan right?

But the reality is that with 3 gone from last years line up, and the possibility of losing current recruits it may take a year or two to get back to where we are accustomed under JB.

billy Donovan have any chance of coaching next year?

Gregg Marshall would be a home run hire from a purely basketball perspective. The guy had Wichita State - WSU - in the top 30 in barttorvik 8 straight years, including 4 top 12 finishes. He can coach offense and defense. And at 56 he’s not particularly old.

He may not want to come, he may not be a good fit, etc., but if it’s just about basketball, his resume is outstanding, he’s done so much more than guys like Archie Miller or even Shaka Smart ever did.

But speaking of Shaka, I’d take him over a lot of the other guys bandied about, especially when you consider who might actually be attainable. His efficiency numbers have been decent at Texas and his luck last year was really bad. He is young and would be a perfect fit at Michigan. I was never a huge Shaka believer, but with his recruiting and ability to coach defense, I think he’d put good teams together at Michigan and would have some room to grow.

I am on the fence with Shaka, but I think much of that is based in his Mid Major sort of gimmick style of play. But looking back he did what he had to do to win games and it worked.

Since arriving at Texas he has been able to recruit and his style of play has transitioned based on the talent that he has been able to sign.

Still prefer Marshall but Shaka is worthy of consideration.

I agree Marshall is a top flight coach and well rounded. He can coach offensively, defensively, recruits and develops talent. His great Wichita teams were fun to watch and played hard when they locked horns with big name teams like Kentucky. I like the fact that he has had to have an eye for talent and develop it at Wichita. I think his overall resume is much better than many names mentioned.

You’re not wrong. Texas was 25th in KenPom this year, won the NIT. Offensive Efficiency not much worse than Michigan’s. If Shaka ends up our fall back option, then that’s not awful. I think there’s more upside there then people think.

Man, I’m talking myself into Shaka now. What a time.

I love the idea of Shaka at Michigan, he will bring lots of energy. High end recruits and a similar defensive minded approach! love it.

Hire Marshall, you have Tom Izzo and Matt Painter taking that news very, very seriously. When Izzo finds out that Michigan has hired Smart, he’ll end that call, walk over to one of his many full-length mirrors and stare at himself for several hours while wearing an ever-widening grin on his green and white face.

I’d be wary of Smart at Michigan for many of the reasons cited by posters here. But let’s face it–we’re not deciding. I’m gonna wish whoever comes in well and be praying for them to prove me and the (likely) many doubters wrong. The rumor that Smart has been interested in Yak for Texas suggests that he could continue to hang his hat on excellent D. I’m just gonna miss Beilein’s offenses. But. . . I’m repeating myself now. See everyone when the decision is announced.

Oh don’t give up now. When Manuel’s vacation ends he’ll come here for advice.

Shaka is just Tommy Amaker redux. Hard pass.

Why do you think the coaching search will take a couple of months?

I actually Shaka could do a good job here. I think he’s the right fit personality wise and would recruit a slightly different kind of player than he does at Texas. Like Beilein, Shaka wants his guys to unpack their bags and act like they will stay. His most success was at VCU when he had 4th and 5th year guys on the roster. His playing style is obviously different and he would have to adjust to that, just like any other coach that comes in from another conference.

Ed Cooley would be a great fit, minus the offense. It’s the same offense Al Skinner ran when Cooley was his assistant at Boston College. He’s a Providence guy and grew up there, it’ll have to be a heck of an offer for him to leave. The man can coach and he can recruit.

I’m not sure what Cooley has done that impresses you so much.
