Game 9: Northwestern at Michigan Open Thread

Man, Franz, what a cocktail of production. Glad to see him surging.

If Livers, Franz, and HD are all in sync, high octane upside for this team.

Whole different ceiling for this team if Brooks and Wagner make 3s

As a maker of many of those comments, I give both Franz and the coaches a ton of credit. He’s being used in ways he wasn’t earlier this season and he looks massively better. Everything I wanted to see ive seen! Superstar!

I don’t mind the tech honestly. Flex on em Chaundee!

Also only 6 attempted threes by NW is a huge win. If you can hold teams to 6 3’s a half and 42% from 2, you’re gonna win a lot of games.

And yet some have started making them about Livers…2 or 3 bad games doesn’t define a season even a shortened one

Crazy that NW only shot 6 3s that half. You gotta think hey will be over 20 3PA by the end of the game. Probably over 25 if they want a chance at winning this.

While our 3pt shooting seems unsustainably good right now, hard not to think we have been unlucky on 2s. Missed dunk, Hunter had a couple he normally makes, Smith missed a layup. Northwestern meanwhile hasn’t had an easy look in a while.

This hasn’t been mentioned but Mike Smith is working his a$$ off on defense. Multiple times he worked hard to front a bigger guy, he took a charge, he has a steal or two. He’s never going to be “good” but you can live with him when he’s working hard like that

After this half Franz is up to 33% from 3 and Brooks is up to 37%

I cannot believe how much my hope for this season has changed in a month. “Hope we stay healthy and scrap to .500 in conference play” to “hope we win the conference and make a final 4 run if the tournament happens”. Literally everyone in the rotation is playing close to the best outcome I would have predicted preseason. This is so much fun.

The coaches get Hunter more touches in the 2nd half ??

If Smith had shot, with no hesitation, he may have missed. We can’t know for sure.

I’ll take a 14-point lead, at any rate.

Hard to force feed touches inside against that zone with so much length on the perimeter.

Just realized this guy on BTN is THE Ben Brust from the 2013 loss @Wisconsin

Man, just can’t get over how good Mike Smith has been and how wrong I was. Might not be the biggest, but he fights for defensive position and brings that true PG element to a team that desperately needed it.

Franz playing unbelievable on both ends (but this is the Franz I thought we’d get!).

Booie is going throw warmups. Did a run through the layup line and then did some sprints up and down the court. Talking to the trainer and looks like he will play.

General comment: I don’t like how eager refs are to call technical fouls on anyone displaying emotion/passion on the court.

Other general complaints about officiating:
-Changing momentum by taking an eternity looking at replays and then still getting the call wrong after watching the play in slow motion from all angles for five minutes
-I remember a time when a player slipping and sliding on the floor with the ball was an automatic travel. Now it’s never called. Must have been a rule change some years back I missed, but it doesn’t make sense to me.
-Flops are rewarded much more often than punished. Too many offensive fouls are being called.

9-17 from deep for us

Only FT this half was from the tech too. If one team starts to benefit from FTs in the second half, you’d have to imagine it’s us
