Game 6: Tarleton State at Michigan Open Thread

OK, so I’m watching the replay on DVR and I just saw the tech against Moussa. At the game we couldn’t understand what had happened. At first I thought he may have hung on the rim but he clearly didn’t do that. Then I sarcastically said he got a tech for showing to much energy and enthusiasm. It seems that’s what happened, and the ref assumed that Moussa was “taunting.” I don’t think he was. I honestly think he was extolling the Maize Raige to raise the roof a bit and help raise the energy and enthusiasm in the building. He was trying to fire up the crowd and his teammates.

Now, please understand when I was coaching I was pretty tough on players if they did anything but just play. If they so much as looked funny at an official or gave any kind of hand or arm gesture, they would find a seat next to me and hear my admonition that “you can’t play and officiate at the same time, so what is it, do you want to officiate or do you want to play?” The correct answer was, “I want to play, coach,” at which time I’d sub them back in the game. My players also knew that they were expected to exhibit the utmost sportsmanship, they could never get in the face of an opponent and if that opponent went to the floor as in diving for a loose ball or after a foul, I expected my players to lend them a hand up. The truth is, all of my players understood exactly where I stood on such matters and my kids behaved themselves terrifically well. I often said, pretty much under my breath or to close friends, “My players are so much better behaved than our fans sometimes are!”

So, I was pretty disciplined with my players, BUT, having said that, I would hate to see a ref try to “officiate” the joy of the game and the excitement over a great play out of a terrific kid like Moussa. There are some blatant examples of unsportsmanlike conduct in sports, and I agree when those occur a tech or a penalty should be called, but I don’t think last night was one of those displays of unsportsmanlike conduct. I think last night was just an example of an exciting and excitable young kid expressing his exuberance for the game. Just my thoughts.

We had great seats to see this. Diabate definitely screamed in the dude’s face after the dunk, but the ref didn’t call anything until he made some kind of gesture towards what I assume the ref thought was the opponent bench. In our seats, we were pretty sure he was pumping up the students, but I actually somewhat understand the call if the ref thought he was blatantly going at their bench (even if it was an error). But I will say the call was definitely not made for A) hanging on the rim or B) the shouting in the guy’s face.

Yeah, he clearly was encouraging the Maize Rage. I don’t know how you felt but I thought the officials really struggled last night. I though the flop stoppage was ridiculous in the moment, but I haven’t seen it on the replay yet.

I will say this, and it probably belongs in the Devante’ thread, but Devante’ could have been called for a few more push offs or clear outs with his off arm. It is a habit of his that, as Dylan says, may be hard to break. There were also what I thought were fouls on Tarleton that weren’t called. For instance, I don’t believe we ever got in the bonus in the first half against a team that was so aggressive and used their hands as much as Tarleton does. But it went both ways, some ridiculous things, the flop stoppage stoppage when we were about to shoot a layup, for instance, but just, again, inconsistency on the part of the refs. Just my opinion.

Agree. I thought Moussa was yelling to the fans and should not have been teed up.
He also got screwed on the block call. He was not inside the arc and he came to a full stop for at least a second before contact. Compare that to the block call they called against us in the AZ game.

Yes, I now agree on the “block” call. At the time, at the game, I couldn’t see on the monitor if his heel might have been barely touching the arc, so I didn’t complain as loudly as others around me did, but he certainly was there and set! I will say, though, as a reaction to the crowd, I DID join in on the chorus of boos! By that time I was already upset with the officials.

The replay I saw at home showed Moussa’s heel to be touching the line, which means he was inside the restricted area.

Replay on the Jumbotron pretty clearly showed a space between his feet and the line by the time he got set. I know as a ref yourself you tend to defend them at all costs, but they’re not infallible.

I thought the same thing. Looked like he was in the circle to me. Was watching another game and they pointed out that over the line counts as on the line I believe. So if that was right it seems like the right call.

What angle was that from? Because the replay they showed from the baseline on tv he looked to easily be on the line.

I was watching on TV at home. I saw the replay once but didn’t bother to re-check it just because it looked clear to me the first time. Perhaps I saw it wrong. They did show Juwan motioning up to the scoreboard. It must have been an entirely different angle from what we saw on TV.

I definitely do not defend officials at all costs. I’m not sure where you got that perception of me.

Just past posts :man_shrugging: The at all costs defense of the Dickinson “travel” on the Purdue euro step last year that doesn’t get called at any level of basketball sticks in my mind IMO.

There’s nothing wrong with that. Say someone was trying to trash the people who constructed Michigan Stadium’s WiFi network, I’d probably try and defend them. We often have a soft spot for people we identify with. Refs often get unjustly blamed for an entire team’s failure to succeed and if I were a ref I would also be trying to correct people when that happens.

 You have a better memory than me.

Like I said, if people tried to diss my profession I would also try and defend my compadres. I really don’t hold anything against you even if I disagree with you. I completely understand the disagreements. I accept that I may be incorrect about things and my bias innately interferes in my ability to objectively analyze the refereeing in games. We’re all a bit more frustrated than usual given the results so far. Don’t feel like you can’t share your opinion on refs. I may have a snarky response, but it’s genuinely nothing personal and your perspective is appreciated even if I hate it. I feel like the forum would be lesser off without your perspective FWIW, so don’t take my salty comments too seriously and I sincerely hope that my bull**** doesn’t stop you from sharing

If it was on the line then it was a block.

I actually really appreciate your input on officials. The truth is I’ve been known to be less than fair. When I coached, though, I seriously was always respectful. As a fan, not so much, so I appreciate the perspective you bring.

You know I’ll never forget that call. I’m still salty.

That’s why I bring it up. I understand it might be technically correct, but ****ing **** that never gets called!

I still couldn’t recall the play so I flipped to the Purdue recap from January. No mention of the play, but that’s beside my point. That was the game where Sasha didn’t play and there was all kinds of COVID chatter. I swear that feels like it was 3 years ago. What a kick in the gut the past (almost) couple years has been.

Alright, I flipped to the Purdue game thread because I have no life and it was killing me that I couldn’t recall the play. Now I know why I can’t recall the play. It’s because I have never seen the play.

I did, however, reply to someone saying that Hunter took two steps without dribbling with that pretty much being the definition of a travel. I also criticized officials about a couple of different things, so I guess I was OK with the costs of doing that on that night. Just goofing around on a nothing-to-do Thursday night. I don’t mean anything by this. I just think it’s funny.
