Game 31: Michigan at Michigan State Open Thread

At this point, the analytics have proven beyond a shadow of a doubt that auto-bench is self-punitive. There’s no doubt to give him the benefit of.

The autobench is a thing I endorse, especially on the road. You think the refs are swallowing their whistles tonight? You have Spartans jumping into defenders and getting rewarded.

I love John Beilein like he’s my grandpa. And auto bench won’t change that, but doesn’t make it the right thing to do. Johns was lost out there.

like the new pic lol

JMO but autobench isn’t going to change and isn’t a problem. Is what it is.

I think it is safe to say Charles will not play in this game.

I endorse it too when it’s one guy. I think it’s a whole different strategy to auto-bench three guys at once, especially with Matthews out in a game for a banner against your rival.

Thanks! Tried to use an animated gif and it randomly selected this frame.

We’ll see. First 5-10 minutes of the 2nd half of B1G games are usually when the whistles are in full force. It’s a tradition unlike any other.

it was everyone on here lol

Winston 1-5 and 2 turnovers

Simpson 3-8 and 2 turnovers

Neither has scratched from deep

Refs are the only thing keeping MSU in this. Just keep playing as you have.

Maybe there’s a case to be made once you saw that the refs were now done with the whistle-happy part of the game. Dunno. But on paper you would think that an offense with Z, Teske and Poole should outperform Winston-less State. That was just a bad stretch for whatever reason.

That matchup has been surprising so far, in terms of off games by each.

Hope we can get Teske going in the 2nd half

Strange game, but if you are going to be Champions, you have to win in all sorts of fashions.

Pros: UM dictating pace, limiting MSU to under 30 points,
bench has been a great BandAid, re-emergence of Eli, defense has limited MSU 3 point shooting, Poole and Iggy have seen the ball go through the hoop, thos game might serve as blessing in disguise for a deep March run with bench players getting minutes.

Cons: MSU has been able to find an open man under the hoop several times, refs have quick trigger whistle and have blown blatant calls, Izzo influence on refs over the top, inactive Teske (no fault of his, he just needs to find a groove), Tillman becoming difference maker especially on Simpson drives to hoop.

And much more…

Dylan should create a little symposium on autobench, invite a bunch of pundits to weigh in.
