What a terible call on Davis for boxing out! These Refs are horrible combining with Purdue starting to hit shots and Michigan turnovers this could be close finish.

Not able to see the game, so figured I’d address the travelling issue that came up right near the start. There is no such thing as a “gather step” in NCAA rules. If your dribble ends while moving, or you catch the ball while moving, and one foot is on the floor, that foot becomes your pivot foot. The common thought of players being allowed a certain number of steps is incorrect. Once you lift that pivot foot, it cannot be returned to the floor unless you’ve passed, shot prior to that foot returning to the floor. I think it was @CursedBlue who said that almost every layup attempt would be a travel if that were the case. Technically, he is correct, and that is, IMO, the major problem with the current travel rule (which hasn’t changed in forever). “Layup steps” are clearly an accepted move. It would be ridiculous to call a travel every time someone makes a layup (but I’ve seen rookie officials do it  ). The rule is why a proper Eurostep is so difficult to do without technically travelling (grab a ball sometimes and try to Eurostep properly, without travelling; it is DIFFICULT). The main reason many travels aren’t called on attempted Eurosteps and spin moves is that the players are so quick that it can be extremely difficult to know for certain when the player’s dribble ended. A good example is Marcus Carr’s 2nd half spin move last weekend, where he clearly travelled when watching the replay. In real time, with the player only a few feet from you, it’s a different, much quicker ballgame, and you can’t call a travel unless you KNOW it was a travel.

The game would be much better, and easier to officiate, if the NCAA went to international (FIBA) travel rules. Under FIBA rules, if your dribble ends or if you catch a pass while moving, the basic idea is that you’re allowed “2 steps”. We switched to FIBA rules in Canada several years ago, and they allow for so much more freedom of play. It is also much easier for officials to identify travels.

All that we’re missing is Ivey pouring a bucket of confetti on Franz’s head.

I have such an appreciation for Eli’s game. What a calming presence, so solid in all aspects. It’s been so much more noticeable since that Minnesota game.
