Game 12: Michigan at UCF Open Thread

The bloom has fallen off the rose. You don’t get outscored by 26 points in 15 minutes by UCF and believe things can be salvaged.

Biggest disappointment is the roster construction, Howard obviously wants more post touches but overall it’s pretty clear he needs a beilein like constructed roster to reach his peak. This roster is anything but that.

Some of ya’ll need to take a deep breath. It was a top-50 road game. It doesn’t mean the season is over.

He definitely brought talent but he’s responsible to recruiting talent that fits his system and the other players on the roster. Michigan put a lot of eggs in Jones’s basket and it hasn’t worked out. No one can get their shot off the dribble, no one can reliably hit 3s except for Eli. These are flaws that should have been ironed out during recruiting/transfer portal process. And unfortunately those are flaws that Michigan cannot overcome unless they are playing teams with significantly less talent/size

The biggest “Juwan issue” is the defense. I think the offense is about as good as can be based on how people are playing. I won’t stand for Penny-Juwan comps though that are bound to pop up. That’s lazy Sparty analysis

It’s not over of course but what have you see that has gotten better so far? I’m asking you because if anyone can see things that idiots like me don’t see it’s you.

I’m not saying they should have improved to their peak form at this point but you’d expect to see some areas of improvement to give you hope things were salvageable right?

It’s a little weird considering it seems like everything on the Heat is so dependent on having multiple deadly outside shooters. I’m a little confounded we don’t seem to be able to stop anyone, but some of that is that it’s tough for freshman to stop anyone, I guess.

Caleb Houstan: 28 minutes, 1 point, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 TO, 0/7 from the field

very very stinky

Well they have 18 games left and the BTT unfortunately they haven’t developed any type of team personality. Three of their next four are against MSU/Purdue/Illinois. Do you believe they are going to find any type of game in the next 3 weeks?? Doesn’t look like it.

I mean, there’s nothing glaringly wrong with the roster construction for this year’s team, some players just haven’t panned out such as Houstan and Jones. OK, maybe you can say we could have added another transfer but really, Kobe, Houstan, even Diabate are all players that Beilein would have taken.

Miss on Houstan, miss on Jones. That’s the biggest reason we are where we are.

Also I’m not even close to giving up on Houstan, just talking about to this point in the season.

I’m not giving up on him by any means. We won games with jones disappearing, but we gotta have something from him.

Well how do you fix the D? They had issues his first year, great last year, not good this year. That has to do with roster construction.

There have been equally worse times in seasons and teams have turned it around so I won’t give up. But I don’t have any expectation for it either.

This teams roster needed Houstan to be a legit all B1G level player. And he’s not close, which is shocking by to me. If Houstan plays like that there’s honestly nothing the coaches can do

No doubt but the number of comps is lessening by the game. I’m terms of Michigan comps we’re down to 2010-2011 at this point.

More Kobe. Less Houstan & Johns. Please

Yeah I agree mostly. But there’s been really bad off ball stuff imo. And we can guard ball screens either. Some of that is coaching

Why is this dude even on draft boards right now? Minus recruiting rankings theres zero that translates to nba

Minn was also an absolute embarrassment. Idk if I would say 100x tho considering we played a solid 1st half tonight and had a 12 point lead completely wiped. I guess what I’m getting at is that there’s been a lot of embarrassment to start this season from Seaton Hall, getting stomped by Arizona and so on that we’re not used to as a fan base. I don’t really buy the, “it’s just a young team narrative who needs to figure out how to play together.”

Its my feeling that there is something fundamentally wrong this year (not sure what but something, maybe chemistry, checked out already thinking about the NBA mentality, team construction, idk) and the fact remains that Coach B’s players with the exception of Eli are all gone now and that also means most of his ideals that were ingrained into those players are gone, aka mental toughness, fundamentals, making the complex simple. To the eye test this team is embarrassing compared to expectation, I am sure none of the players or staff are going out there with a mindset that they want to throw the lazy pass for a turnover or lose their man on defense but at some point when the light switch doesn’t click on you have to just accept that something is broke.
