Five thoughts on Michigan hiring Juwan Howard

I was referring to midrange

No offense, guys, but everyone in the world is convinced of the value of the three. It’s under what conditions twos continue to have value that’s of interest.

Consumers like seeing a spaced floor, because it gives athletes like Giannis and Ben Simmons the real estate to make dazzling plays at the rim. That space is created by three point shooting.

you forgot FT’s  I’m with you though. The the math makes any debate pointless. It’s clear that shooting 3’s and getting to the rim (sometimes just to draw a foul) should be priorities of all teams offensively.

Bottom lines:

No one has any idea how Howard will do as a head coach in college. Every prediction and projection is nothing more than opinion and speculation.

No matter how Howard does, he will be gone in no more than.5 years. Either fired because he falls short, or hired back to the NBA as a head coach there if he does well here. Hopefully we’ll be better prepared to replace him next time.

It’s amusing to declare the results of his tenure unknowable, and then in the same sentence express certainty that he will bolt for the NBA given the opportunity.

The results of his tenure ARE unknowable. Do you have any evidence to the contrary? No, you don’t

Which is why I said IF he does well, he will take an NBA coaching job, and why I left open the possibility that he might not do well. Try understanding, please,

I don’t know if you’re concern trolling or just pessimistic but it’s tiresome.

We know Juwan had interest in an NBA head job, but that was before the Michigan job came open. We do not know that he prefers the NBA to Michigan.

Yep, just like Harbaugh was here 3 years max before leaving back to the NFL. You don’t know what you don’t know. I’d assume Howard wants to be successful to the point where he can pick what NBA job he goes after if he wants to coach in the league, not just take the first opportunity that comes up.

Who said Harbaugh was here three years max? Nobody with a brain.

I agree with your comment that we don’t know how this will turn out from a coaching perspective. I do disagree with you that he will automatically be gone in 5 years. That is as much of a random guess as saying he will retire here. I did hear Chris Webber say that Howard will never leave Michigan. This was before Howard was hired. Maybe he was throwing us some BS but it is the only real insight I have right now. Either way, I am just going to enjoy the moment.

I’m not sure why anyone would expect him to be here for the long term, other than wishful thinking. His association with Michigan was for only three years, more than 25 years ago. I’ll wager that a lot of people posting here weren’t even alive when he played here. He has much, much closer, longer term and more recent ties with the NBA, and he is already on the radar of multiple teams as a possible head coach. If he shows he has the chops as a HC, there’s no way the NBA doesn’t grab him back.

Again, you may be right. Why would Chris Webber state unequivocally that Juwan will buy a house right on campus and never leave the program. That this is the ultimate lifelong dream for Howard. He may go to the pro’s and I hope he has that option. It means he had big success at Michigan. Sometimes people are happy where they are…sometimes they aren’t. I have been hearing that Harbaugh would be back in the NFL within 3 to 5 years of being at Michigan. This is year 5. Based on those with opinions, this will be Harbaugh’ last year.

This isn’t an out there point. JBs tenure was longest since Johnny Orr in the 80s. So if Howard here only 4-7 years, that’s about average for a Michigan coach

Dude is 46. If he has success NBA will be there. He can coach here ten years and still have time for the nba.

I don’t get the assertions that there is some unceasing danger that we lose Juwan to the NBA when he is just getting started here, though they mirror the endless similar jabs at Harbaugh. To think the guy won’t be putting his all into winning in Ann Arbor makes no sense–he’ll want to do well whether he thinks it would be fun to coach in the NBA, someday, or not. If he goes we know it’s unlikely he moves to a good job unless he has succeeded. . . what more could we ask?

Following are 3 things I hope Juwan does that Beilein didn’t.

  1. Eliminate Beilein’s ā€œautobenchā€ when a foul occurs irregardless of whether the foul was a player mistake or a bad call by the ref.

  2. Improve the home ooc schedule including the elimination of teams ranked 200+ out of 350 D1 teams. Beilein disgustingly had us play too many teams ranked 300+.

  3. At least occasionally recruit a 5* or McD All American player.

Whose schedule would you like Michigan to emulate? I don’t know a single major conference team that doesn’t schedule any 200+ ranked teams.

You might get some due to preseason tournament tie ins but I would avoid scheduling any team from the swag, meac, America east, NEC, or southland

Tbh I just think that entire area was more important in the RPI era. I used to be quite frustrated with 5-6 300’s ranked teams, but with NET it doesn’t seem to be a big issue.
