I’m starting to lose steam on ivy. He’s been around organized basketball all his life. Why is he so incredibly raw? There’s a difference between having huge upside and just being very raw for how much basketball you’ve already played in your life.
Not totally sold on Ivey or anything but man that burst and then dunk. Just absurd.
Watch some AAU tournaments…then you’ll understand. Especially since he’s the classic “open gym” type of player who can dominate with the ball in his hands against just about anyone he saw in HS so he didn’t have to do those more nuanced things like “play good team defense” or “utilize a ball screen to set up others”.
Too good of an athlete to learn is somewhat of an excuse. One part of a potentially satisfying answer to the question. He is still extremely raw for a kid with his background. Especially given his parents’ background.
This is a good single game video of Shaedon Sharpe showing every time he’s involved in a play. Makes, misses, assists, passes that end up in misses, turnovers, etc. The video keeps the tally on the bottom of the screen of his stat line.
My takeaway is you can see the skills that made him a top rated recruit. His shot looks nice, the athleticism is clearly there, and he seems to have a solid basketball IQ making some good passes and coming in for blocks as a help defender. The biggest problem is that this video shows the highest level of competition he has faced in his basketball career. With some of the wild shots, forced passes, and loose handle against this level of competition, I don’t think it’s very likely he’s ready to contribute in the NBA next season. Yes, this is extrapolating based on a single game, but I think pretty much every AAU game looks like this, so one game or 20 games probably won’t result in a huge difference in takeaways.
That stance by Harper though… Ivey has great athleticism but this clip showed me more what a player can do when the defender is in terrible guarding position.
I disagree on KD comparison for Chet. It’s hard to find a comp for Chet. He’s not a wing player, he’s more of a big PF or stretch big. He doesn’t have the handle nor the chop to score one on one.
My comp for Mathurin is KCP. I think that’s the right comp for him because he’s a straight line explosive athlete with good shot. People forget how good KCP was at UGA and didn’t find his footing until he went to the LAL.
I’m not sure about the Bridges comp for Murray. Murray projects to be a solid 3 and D player in the next level but I don’t think it’s the right comp. Otto Porter seems more appropriate for Murray IMO. Not a dynamic athlete but will be a good role player surrounding the star player. Murray would be fine outside of top 5 IMO.
KCP was a so-so shooter from 3 at UGA.
Stylistically, KCP and Mathurin plays very similar. Both are straight line explosive athlete plus KCP has shot better than 38% in 4 of the last 5 seasons and Mathurin is a 38% 3 pt shooter at Arizona so the comp sticks for me. If you’re talking about college, KCP shot 37% at UGA and was SEC POY where he was likely the only threat on offense so he carried a larger load as a scorer at UGA.
Agree that bridges and KD are poor comparisons. Bridges was MUCH less skilled and MUCH more athletic coming outta college and KD is a true unicorn as a real small forwad, and I just don’t think Chet can play on the perimeter defensively.
Bridges was a borderline 40% career three point shooter in college? Where do you get that he was less skilled? Are you thinking Miles?
Yup. Thinking Miles. my bad.
Think Murray is a better prospect than Mikal Bridges. Same speed more strength. But it isn’t an awful comparison. Keegan is kind of interesting prospect in that he has shown real power and effectiveness close to the rim. Actual post moves! Very rare to combine that w his outside shooting. I kind of think he will be a very, very good roller/popper at NBA level.
Ivey’s growth from inconsistent freshman to AA the following season is encouraging and it tells me that he is coachable and can learn concepts and apply it to his game. I do think that his game is hampered by lack of spacing in college level and he’ll see far more spacing in the NBA.
The line was about a foot closer then, so 37% now is better than 37% in 2013. But you make a point about him being their only real option. I think Mathurin might be a little ahead of where KCP was, but it’s a fair comp.
KCP was pretty maddening, though. As a Piston, he’d have one really good game every couple of weeks and be pretty disappointing (on offense) the rest of the time. He did give good defensive effort, though.
Hard comparison to make, KCP. He’s had the alcohol issues. Without that, maybe that comparison would be more exciting to me. KCP has had his moments over the years. But that’s still not that exciting as an outcome. You can get most of that in FA. Big comedown from what we were hoping for.
KCP’s flashes of potential as a SG probably steered us to go for Stanley Johnson instead of Devin Booker too…

I went Mathurin. I really like his game and it’s a position of need right now. His athleticism and shooting seem to be a great compliment to Cade. I like Duren as a prospect, but just think he’s more Dwight Howard / Andre Drummond than Embiid. A player you wouldn’t mind on your roster, but not at the price of a top-7 pick.
