Leaning back before he’s even hit is the best.
Don’t understand Hardaway over Beasley to close
Surprised teams in the pros always seem to advance the ball to midcourt in these situations (up one possession with the ball). If you keep it on the baseline you probably have an easier time inbounding it and burning time, since the defense has to defend the entire court.
YEEEEEEEEEAHHHH!!!
Thibs had a major brainfart!
He forced two late misses from Bridges. DPOY, BABY!
Thibs is so painfully stupid
Franz has full blown yips with the jumper
It’s really unfun to watch
I think this is actually the reasoning for advancing the ball. Easier to inbound, can take more time off.
I’ve never seen anything like it in terms of… his touch around the rim has been genuinely special. He’s had absolute circus finishes from all angles and distances. Absolutely dialed with the floaters and runners. But when he loads on C&S you can see him fidgeting with the ball, just no rhythm or consistency to how he’s letting them go. Wild
I don’t think he ever went full yips before this season but I wonder if he really fidgets with his shooting mechanics a lot. His DARKO 3pt% chart is pretty all over the place?
I felt like I looked for this once and had a really hard time finding it but we thought we were getting a sniper when he came over from Germany right?
I remember him slumping basically the entire freshman year with the shot and kept thinking it’s the wrist, surely he’ll snap out of it? And then he just never really shot that well at any point.
I’m never trusting “his wrist was injured, he’ll be a good shooter!” again
No one threw me like Caleb though. I watched a ton of Montverde. He was lights out from a standstill, which he got constantly since he played for the Monstars. At minimum, I thought he’d do that well. Then he hit the backboard with like every third attempt from the corner.
Never saw him take a single attempt on the move and that didn’t occur to me until he got to Michigan. One of the worst movement shooters I have ever seen. Completely uncoordinated. Nearly put a hole in the backboard on even the simplest 1-2 step in to a shot.
Yeah shooting was supposed to be his strength. I remember a breakdown showing he had a super quick release too, and combined with his size that was supposed to make him be able to get off a high volume at 40%.
I was concerned even when he led the team in Fiba Under 19 4 years ago. Mathurin/Edey/Nembhard both looked more comfortable and 3 of those are more than capable NBA players.
I watched a handful of his games at Monteverdi and only saw him have one good shooting game. Always thought he was overrated as a shooter.
Didn’t he shoot 50% from 3?
IIRC Franz’s FT% and 3pt% at Alba were nice, yeah. He’s got kind of an awkward looking motion but I always thought the big issue was the shot was too flat. I don’t know enough about the physics but that feels like the exact kind of thing that could lead to a big discrepancy between your FT and 3*?
And since @telekinetic brought it up, I thought Roddy’s yips were preceded by an effort to add some more arc to his shot. Went from flat to high arc to yikes.
I’d love to know more about what these guys are doing to practice their shots. I know there are some common devices employed by teams for this stuff but I’ve never seen them in use. I wonder if some guys respond weirdly to them or just use the tools poorly. Or, whatever, maybe it’s all random.
*Like, I think you’re trying to find an optimum between the speed of the ball in the direction of the ground vs giving yourself the best angle of approach where the more near vertical the entry of the ball at the hoop the more likely the ball misses the rim which increases the likelihood of a make? And then obviously you need to minimize side to side variance.
