Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk

I think it’s just the vibe his workouts are giving off via scuttlebutt probably

It sounds like you compared their offensive game to Giannis so not sure what you mean by it

Ok that’s a surprise…W seemed like a no brainer, but between MY Harland losing to Scotland and the release of USWWC roster (and a pretty interesting US Open Sunday), I have found limited time to keep up w the scuttlebutt. Daughter had a lax tourney too. V good sports week for late June, TBH. Except for the Reeves stuff I guess.

That’s where I was at back when Pelton’s model was the only one that had dropped plus it’s easy to sell me on productive freshmen that are young for their year. But there have been a bunch since that like him less. Big boards don’t seem to have made up that ground. I don’t think he’s completely out of that tier or something but the heuristics aren’t as good as they were.

My mistake for literally ever using the word “comp” bc someone always says “no that’s wrong”

He said if you can get to the rim when you want, shooting has less of a premium (a la Giannis/Morant)

Whitmore has extenuating circumstances that explains why his stats aren’t great in his freshman year. Nova was an all around shitshow and I’ve said this that college coaches who I know aren’t impressed by Neptune’s scheme/system which is why they’re giving Whitmore a pass for it. There’s no spacing and they didn’t figure out that the best way to win is to have Whitmore be the guy which he got better at the end of the season. Whitmore also had a hand injury that cost him the preseason workout/practice which led to a slow start in shooting.

I’m not buying lack of BBIQ bc of the system and he showed a lot more in USA FIBA tournament where he looked like the best player on the team. He’s super young and I’m not all that worried about his negatives compared to the Thompson twins.

The thing is I don’t think they’re all that good at it. Ausar is bad at it. Amen is good at it in transition but half court, they’re both not good at it.

I’m worried about how they play at half court setting bc OTE is basically AAU ball where they thrives on transition. That’s my biggest negative for them.

I think assuming they can only play OTE ball because that’s what they played in OTE is probably doing a disservice

i gotta say, it’s very funny that over the last 6+ months you’ve become the pre-eminent thompson hater on this board, for reasons you’ve explained in detail, and pretty much convinced me of the same, but then revealed today that your comp for the worse one is shawn marion, who was an all-star four times, averaged 30 minutes a game for an nba champion, played for one of the most exciting offensive teams of all time, etc.

i’m not much of an NBA guy - vibes more than actual understanding, like how i consume the college game but even more so - so i have no actual opinion on how right or wrong you will be, but it was a very good reveal. the prestige!!

I’m kind of dumb but isn’t it not a shock that most models would be kind of similar? Like how much can one model really differ from one? they’re all taking in production and mixing with age and maybe some physical attributes. But I guess having more and more models say something wouldn’t convince me any more than just 1 or 2 decent ones

At the end of the day

They have a high bust potential

But their physical profile is exceedingly rare and tantalizing, especially mixed with their makeup and vision and unselfishness

The comp is always about the player stylistically not their accomplishments. Far too many people take it as how they’ll do in the next level. I always make a comp based on the players style, not their career arc. Both aren’t mutually exclusive

Marion fits bc he’s not a great shooter but is a good role player especially on defense who can switch 1-4. Will he have the same career arc as Marion? Very unlikely bc of what Marion can accomplish and it’s a very different era. Suns 7 sec and less accentuated Marion’s strength where he can thrive in transition. If Ausar can go to a team that thrives in transition, he can succeed. I just don’t trust him in half court.

The thing about uber athletic non-shooters is that they have star potential if they figure out their shot. I don’t see that Ausar Thompson has star potential. If you’re six seven in the nba, and a star, you got to have at least some shooting and at least some creation or a whole lot of one or the other. I like the processing and the passing, but it’s not clear that there’s enough there to call him BPA at 5.

Guest said it best above – shooting is a premium skill
Hendricks at 5

For the record I’d pick Whitmore not Ausar

I just think that this thread has gone far too low on them

You can learn to shoot, can’t learn how to be the fastest guy on the floor or learn how to be 6’7”

I just don’t understand why people thinks Hendricks doesn’t have upside. He absolutely does and like I said, I think his ceiling is all-star with All-Defense accolades.

Ivey’s fast
Cade is 6’7"
Hopefully they’ll both continue to learn to shoot better …

I guess I’m all-in on team “fit”

Seemed like that trade would have been good for everyone. Celtics add Porzingis to the team that lost to the Heat (since Brogdon didn’t play in that series.) Clippers add a good PG to go with their stars. Wizards get picks for a guy that’s not in their plans.
