Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk

If I was presiding over a dungheap team and needed BOA, forget my roster, and didn’t care about crimes committed

My big board

Wemby
Scoot
Whitmore
Miller
Amen Thompson
Wallace
“Richard”
Ausar Thompson
Black
Hendricks

Just out of curiosity, because it pertains to at least one if not more of these prospects

How good do you think Magic Johnson would be in today’s NBA? I don’t mean “if he grew up today”, I mean if you time travelled to 1983 and threw a black burlap sack over his head and brought him to now.

I mean, Magic would pretty much be a better Ben Simmons without the abysmal free throw shooting, right?

So, an All NBA level player but not quite the destroyer of worlds because of his lack of shooting (which I’m just assuming, not sure how bad of a shooter he was).

Not a good one. Agrees, Simmons-ish…none of the makeup issues, and as good a passer/ballhandler as Simmons was, Johnson was way better. But Simmons a better defensive player.

one symptom of the umhoops mind virus is reading this post thinking it was about jaaron simmons

I think he’d be in the MVP conversation every year. He’d have to learn to extend his range but his court-vision is unparalleled, and he had a very good handle. With the more offense-friendly rules that have been put in since his era, many things would get easier.

I think people just assume that because guys didn’t shoot 3’s well in the 80’s it means that they couldn’t shoot.
It just wasn’t emphasized back then. It was more of a last-ditch strategy.

Just like there probably could be some elite post-players in today’s game who aren’t.

That’s a great point. Chris Paul isn’t much of an outside shooter and is still an elite player in today’s game because of how he runs the game. Jordan probably reinvents his outside shot if he played today - he didn’t have to back then.

Likewise, there are probably some guys from the 80s who were great that would struggle in today’s game because of the focus on shooting and iso play. How are Karl Malone and Charles Barkley going to play PF in an era when they have to chase Kevin Durant around? Totally wild to think about crossing eras.

Very wild kherodan

Well, first Karl Malone would be in worse trouble than Ja Morrant because of that statutory rape. A social media-era might’ve caught him in college.

How would Durant fare if he went back to 1988 and was getting handchecked and smashed when driving the lane? And would his coach let a 7-footer hang out on the perimeter? How good would Kyrie’s handles be without being able to do a little carrying?

My guess is that the super-talented players would adjust to any era, given some time.

I think there is only one question that matters if an 80’s/90’s all star team played a 2020’s all star team. Would the 80’s/90’s team foul out and forfeit before the 2020’s team quit?

I’m not really saying in time

I guess my question is how good is a massive guy, an A++ passing, dribbling PG with a questionable shot and sporadic defensive commitment

(Great finisher too)

Fwiw, Dunc’d On did Cam Whitmore today and their comp was “Miles Bridges”

They have him lowest so far - so under Wemby, Scoot, Miller, Amen Thompson

I would call for Weaver to get fired on the spot if he takes him at 5

The first Big Ten player I would take is Jalen Hood-Schifino who I think will be quite good (but only if they trade down and even then there are bigger needs.)

80s 90s team would win.

Of course you think that

He’d have a lot of problems not getting the ball stolen from him consistently. His handle (and pretty much everyone from the 80s) is SLOPPY compared to today’s standards
