Detroit Pistons & NBA Talk

so glad you asked.

I do not want anything to do with Amen. He’s a PG/wing player but he literally is a bad shooter at every part of the half court. I think his shooting % at the rim is at 30% which is terrible considering the league and his athleticism. Plus the league they played in is a joke. It’s basically a next level AAU ball and they’re 2 years older than the players at OTE.

Not sure if this was discussed but what do you all think of the Bey-Wiseman trade? I’m sure mgl is loving Marvin Bagley the Fourth :slightly_smiling_face:

Why have wings when you can have every second draft center in the league?

Edit: in all seriousness, I saw reporting surrounding Bey’s desired extension number (woah) and if that was the case, it calms me down a little bit. Like, I get dealing him, but I think my opinion of Wiseman is pretty obvious.

Like, he’s young, and he’s strong, and I think his effort is good. It’s certainly not impossible he can be good, but I think Duren gives you all Wiseman’s physical assets and has already shown more aptitude.

Yeah, I can understand the reasoning behind the trade in a vacuum. Weaver thinks Saddiq Bey is who he is at 23 y/o and lacks the athletic ability and skills to be much better than an average NBA contributor. The Pistons are still in the position of acquiring and collecting young talent in the hopes of unearthing a player that really move the needle. Wiseman is 21, athletic, and had some mitigating circumstances that explain his career so far. His potential is much higher than Saddiq’s.

The only problem is that we have 4 centers and now two with negative iq in Bagley and Wiseman, and I guess Duren because he’s a baby.

It’s my hobbyhorse with Weaver but there is a time to try to assemble a playable team and a time to do the lottery ticket stuff. Wiseman is clearly a lottery ticket, Bey can be part of a team. Like this year’s nightmare quality of play is not all on Troy (Cade’s injury obviously a huge setback regardless of whether you think he’s a sure fire star or a possible star), but this roster had some massive extremely obvious flaws before a ball was bounced, and at some point they need to get a roster than can produce an actual 9-10 man rotation, and I don’t think they were close this year - a third (fourth?) center project doesn’t really move that.

So Wiseman isn’t a stupid lottery ticket, but lottery tickets by definition generally don’t pay out. Even if there isn’t a sure fire All NBA guy in the group, I think Cade, Ivey, Stew, and Duren have shown they can play real NBA ball, and it’s not nuts to try to get them support to give it a shot, acknowledging you still may need at least one more piece of premium talent.

At 6’8", Stew is more of a 4. At least as a starter.

I haven’t seen Wiseman yet, but Weaver also talks about wanting a big tall person at the 4 spot, so maybe it’s a gamble that he can play next to Duren?

This is Wiseman’s Year 3, right? So he will be extension eligible in Fall 2023? What is qualifying offer? Seems likely to be expensive w/ a former #2, and he’s done less to justify than Bags. But that’s a long time from now …

If he gets extended, I think it would be for less than Bags got paid.

I’m guessing they don’t extend Wiseman, see how he works out, and he’ll then be a restricted free agent, I believe.

I’ve been impressed with him. His defensive awareness is better than I expected and better than Bagley and Duren right now. And he’s shown an ability to move laterallly and flip his hips. Offensively, he’s very skilled. I didn’t really know much about him so I was expecting another Bagley but I see the potential there.

I like Duren quite a bit better but Wiseman’s offense in Year 3 is better right now.

Long term Duren will be better but he just doesn’t have as much awareness on defense as Wiseman at the moment.

I’m not smart enough at basketball nor have I seen enough Wiseman to talk about his play, but I can tell you that he was statistically a millstone offensively around some otherwise pretty fantastic offensive lineups.

Again my ā€œcomplaintā€ here is not whether Wiseman is worth a flier (he is) its just that they don’t have a 14 man roster that resembles a playable basketball team, and if they do that again (and this isn’t a step in that direction) we have a pattern emerging.

Ivey also is no sure thing. His physical tools are obvious. But he was relatively inefficient at Purdue and has been wildly inefficient this season—ranking 263 in 9 categories fantasy leagues. I see him as a healthy Levert or Clarkson.

What was Bey’s desired number?

You probably would be right to begin the season but this is not the case since 2023 started. He’s been efficient and Ivey is becoming more of a sure thing. He has improved leaps and bound as the season goes on and I think he’s the 2nd/3rd best rookie so far. He’s been playing really well out of the spotlight.

Yeah I think the board/people in general are too low on Ivey and too high on Duren, in my opinion.
