College Basketball Open Discussion

Jason Preston is good. He’s a NBA PG. Hard to believe that he only had one D1 offer coming out of HS and had to do a prep school just to get it. Now, he’s Ohio’s best player. Shows how much coaches know how to evaluate talent. Ohio got lucky that he fell through the crack

Except that they fired Tubby Smith, who had an NC under his belt, in less time, out of professed unhappiness with his win production.

If he averaged 2.2 points as a senior that’s, uh, not good.

And he played on the C team for the prep school (it was by choice apparently). He put together a Twitter highlight and sent it to coaches around the country. Only Ohio and Longwood bit and offered him based on it alone. Now, he’s the star player for Ohio. Amazing.

He was sub 6’ and 140 lbs in his senior year. Entering Ohio, he’s 6’2" and 161 lbs. Now, he’s 6’4" and 187. That’s quite a late development for Preston but it worked out for him since he’s on the NBA radar

Well, they will have a bunch of seniors next season but I’m not sure I’m putting a huge bet on ND to make it back to the big dance.

Interesting, still think he should come back. He has some qualities that can make him a good NBA player but not much offense coming from him right now.

Vecenie had him #17 in his latest mock draft. I’m guessing if he’s top 20 he will stay in the draft

I know people think that Beilein is jonesing to coach at the highest college level and go for a national championship, but I think Eastern (or Detroit-Mercy if DePaul goes after Mike Davis, as has been reported) is a job he might very well go after. He could do so without moving, recruit without much of the frustrating aspects of pursuing top of the line guys, resuscitate his son’s coaching career, etc. I certainly could be wrong—maybe his highest priority is to go for the gold before he hangs it up—but as competitive as he is, he’s still extremely family oriented and EMU would allow him to do both.

Just my opinion.

I haven’t been to an EMU game in a decade+, do any fans show up? That just seems like a terrible gig specifically

There IS one level that John Beilein hasn’t coached at… AAU!

If he’s really interested in the Indiana job, as reported, then he’s interested in having a big job. Not a sunset posting.

has anyone reported he is interested in the IU job?

An IU reporter did

As an alum of a certain age, EMU hasn’t drawn fans since the Ben Braun glory days 30 years ago. When I say fans, I also mean students who could get in the games for free. Disagree if you like, but it has to be one of the worst jobs in D1 for a variety of reasons.

I can’t express the kind of home run hire Beilein would be there. Recruiting would still be difficult, but if there was ever a guy proven to do more with less, it’s Coach B. Expectations would be super low with no success in a generation and zero media to answer to. I’m sure it’s too low of a dropoff for the kind of job Beilein could get, but for a man who loves a challenge, I can think of few greater ones within carpool distance from his home.

John Beilein is not going to Eastern Michigan. His challenge that he wants at this point is to win a national title. And he has only ever tried to move up the ladder. He’s not going back 5 rungs to EMU to hope to maybe win a MAC title

It’s more than 5 rungs, it’s the worst job in D1. That said, you could have hit the snooze button and let me have my delusional fantasies for another five minutes.
