Bilas and Shulman never sound enthusiastic about what they’re watching.
St Mary’s doesn’t get enough credit. Top 8 in winning percentage past 10 years. Looking like they’ll enter top 15 after this weekend
Also, hopefully this season lessens the stranglehold that the Zags have on the transfer portal. They have beaten us quite a few times these past few years for portal players.
And this concludes my complete overreaction of 2 very good teams playing in an overtime game.
Am I missing someone here? I can’t think of a h2h portal recruitment but I’m probably forgetting something.
Does all of us spending a month fantasizing about Malachi Smith count as a recruitment?
I was referring to Malachi smith and efton Reid but maybe that’s just me looking through my UMhoops lenses and mich didn’t really pursue them to hard….
I also remember wanting nembhard but I want every former 5 star who enters the portal
Nembhard is only playing 27mpg for the Pacers. Michigan has a Final Four they get him.
Boeheim has been a jerk for awhile but Inlaugh at the idea that Pitt (a transfer who had sat two whole seasons at Iowa State injured, a reserve from Marquette, and a guy from Colgate and Wake Forest (2 transfers, 1 from Delaware) “bought their team”, while he has a booster out there paying Jalen Hurts to show up to games and announcing “seven figure offers” to recruits.
yeah but that booster doesnt give a cent to any of the players. he just pays celebrities to sit on the sidelines and act like they enjoy being in Syracuse, NY watching ugly basketball.
Well he’s trying to pay people
But maybe living in Syracuse (awful) playing for a near octogenarian curmudgeon isn’t that appealing (and he did apparent offer an incoming freshman next year 7 figures)
Boeheim gets zero sympathy from me but I do like how he is calling this stuff out. This is going to continue to happen and worsen until there is some meaningful dialogue about what we are doing here. It does take some people in an established position like him to be a voice of change.
But it is very hypocritical of him when you look at his career and how he has operated.
You mean the same Jim Boeheim whose program was found to have a lack of institutional control from 2000-01–2011-12? Who was docked 101 wins for cheating and playing ineligible players during that period? Who before that period had his team banned from the tournament for a year for NCAA violations? Who has recruited and signed numerous guys known throughout the industry to have been “bought?” That Jim Boeheim?
What is he calling out? That Pitt took two kids off the scrap heap? And it turns out they’re ok? That WF and Pitt are better than his team? The only distinction between the dude at Miami and the dude at Syracuse is that people are willing to take the Miami guy’s money and not the Syracuse guy.
Random thought but I seen Washington lost to USC yesterday. One of Washington’s best players is Keyon Menifield. He’s a freshman from Flint Beecher who did a Prep year in Arizona last year. Wouldn’t mind if Michigan kicked the tires on that one in the spring potentially.
Not sure I follow your commentary. I do see that the NCAA abdicated its responsibility in overseeing college sport–maybe had no moral authority left to assert. The vacuum has not been filled by college presidents. Given the comparative corruption and competing interests of schools in different conferences, such an intervention might mean the end of any national intercollegiate vision.
There’s enough hypocrisy engulfing many coaches that one is tempted to discount anything they say. And sour grapes. (Jim Boeheim: How dare an upstart like Pitt assert itself?)
There will be some risers; money might buy Miami’s way back in. But all of this is not going to increase parity or improve the game. And it’s hard to see where any decisive/helpful intervention comes from. A divided and broken Congress?
They don’t even need fans anymore, just markets. It’s great.
I’d say this
Boeheim’s teams slid from good to mediocre to bad over the course of the decade
He wants to say it is NIL/Transfer portal, but the reality is that his slide is longer than that. And accusing two teams with 5 transfers between them (one of whom came from a P5 team) of “buying” their roster is more accurately his bitterness that Wake Forest and Pitt are better programs than his right now.
I would further say that “blaming” these schools for taking kids from Delaware and Colgate is not actually genuinely addressing any problem.
Say what you want about the portal, but it absolutely should increase parity, no? And already has?
Maybe Jim should move down to a lesser conference since apparently a garbage ACC is too tough for him these days. Perhaps the A10 is more his level.
Yep. Hasn’t had a quality season since 2013-14 when they finished second in the ACC. Had some tournament success since then but it’s all attributable to their system. Like the inverse of Rick Barnes (very good seasons, crummy tournament performance).
NIL is still pretty new. I think it’s hard to say how it’s exactly going to shake out. I get coaches don’t want to deal with the portal and NIL but ignoring the exploitive nature of college sports and the under the table dealings wasn’t working for anybody but the coaches before IMO.
