tbd imo… They performed basically exactly at expectations with a senior laden team (but the wins/losses were a little low relative to their conference). Interested in what the next two years look like. If they’re good, he’s gonna be MSU’s next coach.
If anyone wants another good game to watch, Navy and Boston U has been crazy. Overtime is on CBS sports right now
We’ll see if they actually offer him a pay raise this time.
if Washington does leave, id love to get a mark adams/chris beard protege to run the defense
I don’t think anyone is running Juwan Howard’s defense, FWIW.
Probably but juwan has called saddi the dc, and coaches can always change. Look at the switch beilein made.
Has he? Or has Martelli called him the defensive coordinator? I can’t remember when I remember someone asking Howard a question about Washington as “defensive coordinator” and he responded something along the lines of “according to who?”
Seems Eisley was clearly the OC, and in a way that wasn’t so cut/dry re DC.
“He’s asked me to take on kind of the defensive coordinator (role) this year, which is a new space for me to just specifically watch the defense,” Washington said. “But it’s been really cool for me to be able to do that.”
I don’t remember Juwan referring to anyone as a coordinator. I know Phil did with Eisley during the suspension, but I remember Juwan scoffing at the idea of someone being a coordinator publicly. Doesn’t mean it is different behind closed doors, or it could ever change.
I think the scheme itself if fine myself. The players have done poorly executing it this year. Houstan has made obvious gains as has Jones, so I don’t think it is an issue with poor coaching or scheme.
MSU at Breslin was the only gameplan that I thought was a bad call.
I think Moussa and Hunter being on the same roster is a challenge on both ends of the floor. They don’t have the guard play to make the change and feel good about playing small while bringing Moussa off the bench though.
Schmee has been solid to goodish but um should have been a better defensive team in juwans first year and this year imo and that no middle scheme is just wickedly good.
Yeah, I think there’s a difference between Saddi saying it in 2019 as “kind of the defensive coordinator” role and Howard ever acknowledging it. Point being that Saddi does work with the defense and he’s the most defensive focused assistant on the staff, but it is Juwan Howard’s defense. If/when Saddi gets a head coaching job, he’s not going to go out and look for a “defensive coordinator.”
That whole idea is pretty rare in college basketball.
which is strange because the dc thing was wildly successful and notable for beilein and several nba teams(see d’antoni’s rockets teams with and without bzdelik)
Coordinators make more sense for football because you have one group of players exclusively on that side of the ball. Makes more sense in basketball to focus on position groups since they’ll have specific responsibilities on both sides of the ball.
Listened to nate oats, and he splits it up as, one guy defense, one guy offense, one guy player personnel(primary recruiting assistant and scouts opposing personnel). I thought it was an interesting setup.
Yeah this is an interesting question. I think year 1 was a lot of scheme issues: having Teske drop instead of hedge primarily plus NEVER being willing to double. This year has had some scheme issues with making Hunter hedge… but I wonder if Hunter just is actually as bad of a defender was we thought he would be as a recruit, but Franz restricted space enough that he could just wall up last year and barely move.
Only one guy is writing up the scouts? That’s weird. From what I’m aware that is always split up among coaches since that is a fairly big task. What is Nate Oats doing then if they loaded all the scouting work onto one guy and all of the scheme work onto two other guys?
Was he calling them his offensive and defensive coordinator though? Having them focus on one end makes sense but the coach is still gonna be highly involved schematically as I imagine Oats is
He referenced them as coordinators but yeah a hc is still always likely going be heavily involved in at least offense or defense like football coaches often are.
