Cleveland Cavaliers hire John Beilein

It’s already out there that there are 3 or 4 vets that are upset. One was probably Clarkson who got traded. Love is another.

Do you want to walk back your bad take now?

How was that a bad take and how was it wrong?

Well it was certainly wrong given what a high percentage of neutral places on both opinion talk shows like PTI and other discussion forums like r/NBA both massively trended towards “this is nothing.”

Just because people are saying he shouldn’t be fired and that he’s not racist does not means it’s nothing. I agree that he did not intend anything by it and it was an innocent mistake. But If it was nothing, JB wouldn’t have felt the need to apologize multiple times.

It’s universally been considered nothing since the original story dropped.

It was a tiny mistake blown out of proportion initially. The after math reflected badly on some of the players and left little negativity on Beilein.

Is JB not part of the universe? I think nothing = not worthy of reflection or discussion. I don’t think this was that. I think this has been handled very well by JB, the players (other than whoever leaked it, assuming Love) and the media. They talked about what the word meant when used toward black people. They talked about how it was a mistake. They talked about how JB is getting the benefit of the doubt (as he should) because of how he handled it and the respect he has from many of the players past and present. Don’t really see how that’s a bad opinion.

I have had people apologize to me because they wrongly thought I was offended by something they said. In those cases they were apologizing for nothing. The phrase that comes to mind is “you have nothing to apologize for, it was nothing”.

The existence of an apology is not evidence that an offense occurred.

The thing that I found interesting about this situation is there were a lot of people who seemed to suspect that the claim that something offensive occurred was somewhat manufactured for ulterior motives. Feigning offense, as a move to damage someone, if that is what occurred is the “not nothing” that should be exposed, talked about, and discussed. Shaq,Ernie, Kenny and Charles all seemed to get it—or at least they suspected it.

From reports, the players were stunned when it happened. Coaches agreed with JB that he should apologize. After explanation, players forgave him. But the apology was reported to be emotional. Players are stunned and JB isn’t emotional if it wasn’t nothing.

This doesn’t mean JB did anything wrong. And just because someone wasn’t offended and they forgave doesn’t mean the apology isn’t still necessary or useful.

Is this not a significant event in JB”s tenure there? If the team galvanizes around him and they support their coach? I think it’s been a significant event in showing who and what.

The first person that said it was nothing was saying that this shouldn’t even be talked about. And I think that’s just silly.

Yes. Reports from the person who leaked it. You know, someone who clearly wants Beilein out. I’m sure the details are impeccably correct and unbiased.

None of the players denied the reports of the incident. They said once he explained what he meant to say, they understood.

That’s one person and that doesn’t even say he wasn’t initially shocked.

But apparently I’m the only one that thinks this was a significant event so I’ll let it lie.

Who else said otherwise? What player publicly contradicted Garland?

Literally only that report. Again, from an obviously biased source who wants Beilein gone.

Good god why are people dragging this fucking thing on just to score points on each other? Some people had different opinions than you! It doesn’t make them “bad takes”. This isn’t Around The Horn.

I’m very interested in news about Beilein’s tenure in Cleveland.

For just one example, go back and read about the Trayvon Martin killing.

This actually reminds me of a situation a friend of mine was in last year. She’s a high school teacher and let a curse word fly out in class. A couple students (who didn’t like her to begin with) saw this as a chance to complain about her to the principal. Of course, they were traumatized by the fact that she cussed, because no 16-year-old would ever use such language. She ended up getting a minor reprimand.

It’s good that Beilein apologized, because (as discussed here) the word can certainly cause offense, and the point of his comment had been to praise them. At the same time, as Barkley says, if anyone was shocked he probably would have said something right off the bat - this is the pros, these guys aren’t afraid of their coach. Most likely this was more of a reason for discontented player or two to try to get JB in trouble.
