That’s really strange. I clicked on it when Dylan posted it and got the full article without paying. Just clicked on it again and it’s pay-walled. Weird.
Perhaps the ability to get an NIL deal would help him to “take care” of his family. And, no, I don’t think he would make $500 grand in an NIL deal, but I’m not so sure he’s going to get that kind of NBA deal either. I guess we’ll see, though. A little more time will tell. I wish him well.
Two-way deals pay half the league minimum which is about 500K per year. Would be surprised if he didn’t get a two-way.
As I said, we’ll see. Again, good luck to the young man.
I’m hoping that Diabete does pull a two-way deal - but there is certainly no guarantee - there are only 60 spots and they aren’t limited to rookies (up to 4th year players). The back half of the 2nd round ~15 players will probably sign 2-ways and with the holdovers from last year (2 ways can be two year deals), it’s tougher than you think to get one.
Either way, I understand Diabete’s reasons for wanting to go Pro at this time. Different circumstances than Caleb, and he certainly is one of those high upside athletic potential guys that you hope can develop into a Siakam-like player. Best of luck to him.
Looks like Chaundee made about $160k this year between the Lakers and Hawks (not bad, not necessarily life changing) and is scheduled to make $500k next year from the Hawks. No clue how that works exactly or if it is guaranteed. Again, it is too bad that there wasn’t a way for him to make something close to that while honing his craft at Michigan so that maybe in a year or two he could indeed get a guaranteed first round contract worth millions.
So does anyone (other than Dot) still think that Caleb didn’t have a promise from the Magic? Worst kept secret in the draft.
All of them had promises how about that just to make it clear, we just thought that only Caleb did. Clearly Moussa had one too, otherwise why leave UM.
Caleb though had a promise from Oklahoma, then San Antonio, then Milwaukee, then heck whatever team eventually drafted him.
Houston worked out with Orlando last week BTW. And just to make clear how great the Magic front office is, they promised him before the combine that they would pick him early in the second round, before they even worked him out. And kept it so on the down low that most of the mock drafts nba insiders had no clue.
That’s next level management chit.
I mean it sounds like you’re just doing what you’re accusing others of - confirming your preconceived notion?
Schmitz has clearly had a relationship with Houstan for awhile, and is tied in with NBA front offices so much he now is employed by one.
If you want to say you know better, I guess I’m curious.
You are pretty obtuse about this. You have been linked dozens of articles about current NBA players talking about draft promises.
What has a higher hit rate? Draft promises, or your “don’t give up” recruits?
You are working on an 0 fer in about 2 or 3 cycles.
Both. I’m convinced both that Caleb had a promise and that UM should recruit to the bell.
Just an FYI, the never give up comment was related to UM recruiting a certain player who apparently had just decided to take his last official visit to UM. Keep that on the low though.
We understand that one teams promise doesn’t mean the rest of the league is honor bound not to pick him, right?
Ive been long sure that whatever team picked Caleb was going to be one that gave him a promise. And that we wouldn’t know which one until after the draft.
Yep.
I have no idea who gave him a promise. Is your assertion that Mike Schmitz is lying for clicks?
I assert that I don’t know who Mike is or has said.
So I would not be calling him a liar.
So you’ve been posting about Caleb Houstan’s purported draft promise since, from what I can tell, May 11th, and you are claiming to not know who the genesis of that report is?
I guess I’m not that shocked because this is at least the third time you’ve claimed to not know who Schmitz is (funny you never bothered to check!) and that you don’t know who John Givony is.
Extremely weird!
Man oh man. The first guy that I recall talking about a promise was Givony. Back then support for that being the case was his personal tie to Caleb. Then when he mocked Caleb to OKC in the first round, that made conclusive that not only was there a promise but also that OKC was the promising team.
Don’t know who Mike is or what he has said about Houstan. In fact still don’t. By the way, after Givony speculated that Houstan may have avoided the combine because he MAY have been given a promise not only did a bunch of fans run with it, so did a bunch of nba types. I do know that a promise was not the reason why he skipped the combine.
For some reason I’m not offended by you calling it weird can’t say I would feel that way if someone else had.
Props.
Combine news.
Dropped to the second round, mistake or good call by Houstan?
Dropped?? He’s always beed projected in the 28-40 range. I don’t think he dropped.
While I still believe he would/could have played his way into the middle of the first if he returned, this clearly was a justified decision. He played mediocre basketball and is going to get a decent contract and legit shot to hang around the league.
