Big Ten Discussion

IMO, the biggest problem (other than geography because PSU is literally in the middle of nowhere) is the fact that they play their games in a giant arena that on its best night is still half empty and has zero atmosphere. Move PSU basketball back into Rec Hall and pack that place with students and engaged alumni and that is probably a challenging place to play.

I also wonder why Tony Carr left. I can’t imagine anyone with a clue was telling him he’d be a first round pick. OTOH, staying another year at PSU probably wasn’t suddenly going to make him a better prospect. For the most part he was what he was. And he’s getting paid to play in Europe so good for him in that regard.

People were concerned that MD would be ticked off when we played them in the last regular season game last year. That one worked out okay for us. I would like to think we will be highly motivated as well.

Heh, no matter the scenario there’s always a way to spin it as a positive for the opponent and a negative for Michigan. Coming off a loss? They’ll be pissed and out for blood! Coming off a win? They’ll be riding high on a wave of confidence!

Cool. Disappointing loss last night, exiting the NSIC tournament and probably ending the season earlier than expected. But they’ve done a really good job with the team. Casey looks sharp out there as a coach.

I could be quite wrong here, but I think he is primarily focused on defense. If so, he has done a great job. UMD’s improvement on defense this year has been dramatic and was the key to their success.

I’m not sure if that matters. Coaches normally have a few extra years on their contracts for recruiting purposes.

So Chambers is looking sort of okay for next season? Just curious if it’ll be year number two with no new Big Ten coaches. I find it hard to believe, especially with Miles seemingly knowing that time’s up for him in Lincoln.

Yeah, it kinda seems like Chambers will get one more go at it but I don’t think there’s any way that Miles remains the coach of Nebraska after this season.

Agreed. I’m sure it’s somewhere above this in the thread, but my opinion is that Nebraska has five key roster members likely leaving (four seniors and Roby) and really don’t return a TON of pieces – though there is some talent there for sure. This is the sort of squad a coach usually inherits for a total rebuild, and it would seem like that time is right for Nebraska.

I don’t understand how Northwestern is this bad.

The Coach K assistant curse. Mike Brey resisted it for a bit but seems to be succumbing.

I’m wondering if he’ll have his job when he gets of the plane tonight?!?

Heh, the ol’ Lane Kiffin treatment? Nah, that would be cruel. But I can’t imagine he’ll be employed much longer beyond whatever round of the NIT/CBI that Nebraska is bounced.

I was kidding, of course, but, in truth, I’ve always been impressed with Miles as a person, but not necessarily as a basketball coach. I can’t see him surviving this season.

Just for fun, February Big Ten Standings.

Big loss for the Buckeyes as a whole, still need to do just a little bit more work to lock up a tournament bid. Think they do it, but it’s a bit harder now.

He seemed to have a calm and quite philosophical demeanor in the post-game presser, but I couldn’t tell whether that was because he was a goner or had received reassurances that he had another year.

At this point it’s got to be the former.

I really do think he sees the handwriting on the wall. I thought he was his usual classy self in the presser, and that he’s going to go out exhibiting all the class and positivity that he can.

I think that is just how he is pretty much all the time. I wish he was successful there because he seems like a good guy to have in the league.
