Gist = selfish play = they play as individuals & not as a team, not coming to practices & games prepared to get better and then apply strategies…
Was said after yesterday’s game that the team had a horrible practice on Friday and that attitude carried over into Sunday’s game…???
That team had just experienced two good enough wins where they had to pull together and overcome and then to act like that, as though a portion of the players were above making the effort to function as a team?
That’s my impression of what’s being said. That comes from the coaches and players.
That is a bad situation and difficult to resolve. I feel bad for the innocent players and/or coaches who have to suffer with this.
I have seen UM players in the past who I thought were selfish and more concerned about their points or minutes than about winning. It really makes you appreciate those who buy into the team concept and are willing to do what ever it take for the team to be successful.
Yep, I agree. I feel poorly for any team going through that.
I watched the game and didn’t notice any words said or reactions, per se, that would support my supposition. Bears watching, though.

[/quote]It sure does. It is usually easy to see, too. Northwestern sets up that way. The Wildcats are a good team that is more effective on court because they rely on each other.
What do you guys think of tonight’s slate? Purdue at MSU should be very interesting. They are ranked 11th and 12th in the Big Ten in OR% which seems crazy to me.
Chance for Purdue to prove they are a Big Ten contender or for MSU to cement their resume with a great home W.
I think Izzo will have MSU pumped up tonight. They are 5-7 against RPI top 100 teams (UM is 5-6 for comparison), and their best wins are against Minny and NU. They would really like this one. After this their only chances for “marquee” wins are @PU and @MD and vs Wiscy. It’d be really nice if PU could win, maybe shake their confidence a bit before UM comes in.
Side note: Who would’ve thought that not getting Minny at home could deprive us of a top 50 or even 25 RPI victory?
It’ll be interesting to watch MSU play against a team that is so much bigger than them, in the front court; it’s usually sparty who has a 4 & 5 with post moves. Swannigan’s matchup vs Bridges should be entertaining, seems like Swanngian’s matchups are always pivotal.
Yeah, Minny is a puzzle. On the one hand, they could actually have a much better record now – they’ve lost two 2-point games and a 1-point game in conference already, while their wins (including one @ PU!) have been by larger margins. On the other hand, they’re Minny! It seemed inevitable they would lose that game to MSU and they’ll be in some more close ones and will still be Minny. They still have home games against MD, IU, and Michigan – their season might hinge on those outcomes.
And they can’t score and have lived off of defense (6 in kenpom!). Are they really that good on D?
Haven’t watched much Minny, but just looked at Lynch’s stats – 6 blocks per 40/mins. But he’s fouled out of 5 conference games already and has trouble staying on the floor. Seems like a guy you have to attack even if he swats a few.
Purdue dominated the boards and both teams shot well.
MSU falls to 12-9 and are on the verge of missing the tourney for the first time in 20 years.
It’d be great if Michigan can get them another L.
Ironically MSU’s AD is the head of the selection committee (or something like that). haha!
We have two games to give them the kiss of death. They still have @Purdue, vs Wisconsin and @Maryland coming too. If we swept them, you can kiss Izzo’s streak goodbye
Watched the game and, like every other Breslin contest, MSU was very free to initiate contact, all night. Can sympathize with the injuries, missing 2/3 of their centers hurts. But this is just a classic Izzo post-loss comment.
Also, it has been confirmed that Goins broke his nose, and it was pretty obvious at the time of the contact (his own guy accidentally elbowed him). The kid sat out long enough to stop the bleeding, and then played serious minutes for the rest of the second half. Tough guy.
