Big Ten Basketball 2022-23 Discussion

Yeah I think I’m just generally more ok with high floor coaches/programs then most

I’m just tired of defense-first offense-third coaches.

I agree there

Yes and Turg had some success too. Maryland is a good program with a fertile recruiting base in the DMV and on the east coast. I just don’t think anything Willard has done so far is convincing that he will elevate Maryland’s program. These guys are not Diamond Stone, Jalen Smith, Aaron Wiggins, Melo Trimble caliber recruits. Willard is putting together a nice class, but arguably Maryland should always have a top 5 recruiting class in the Big Ten. TBD if Willard will be any more successful than Turg.

By who? Show me even one instance of a player from his own backyard barking at him from the court about not recruiting him hard enough, or saying something in the post-game press conference like, say, just for example, "Yeah, I did feel a little disrespected when I wasn’t recruited by them. [But] I’m really glad with where I am right now. I’m 100 percent saying this is the spot for me, I’m happy to be here at Michigan.”

I feel like that makes them a bit more scary? Turgeons teams felt less than the sum of their parts. If Willard can make them a “high floor” team that’s a pretty tough out given their potential recruiting base and home court advantage.

Turgeon’s teams were usually pretty good in the regular season just not quite as good as they were hyped and then they lost in the first weekend of the tournament. Willard’s teams are usually right around .500 in the Big East and then lose in the first weekend of the tournament.

Maryland is a better job than Seton Hall, but I’ve just never been crazy about WIllard.

In the 7 years Maryland was in the Big Ten with Turgeon, they finished 3rd or better 4 times. Do we really think Willard is going to do better than that? Maryland didn’t do well in the tournament with Turg, but Willard has not had much tournament success either.

I think it’s very possible that Seton Hall markedly improved their coaching situation in this trade off…

It would suck to be a Maryland fan knowing your coach has a 0% chance of building a perennial B1G and NC title contender.

We really got lucky with Juwan.

This was a Brendan Quinn idea but that program should have just backed a dump truck of cash up to Pitino’s house

Nobody rewarded Turgeon for being basically clean, who cares

Wrong Petino!

That’s true, but on the other hand, there is no right Pitino

No it’s not. Succeeding at that level requires an elite coach. Any such coach would have established Seton Hall as the second best program in the Big East behind Villanova. Williard could only manage to have Seton Hall as a third tier program in the an inferior conference.

There is no chance Williard will have more success against a much higher level of competition.

He was not a third tier program in a bad conference.

He was a second tier program in a mediocre conference!

Never said he was.

I did say he had a third tier program in a conference which is inferior to the B1G, which does not mean, or even imply, bad.

Villanova is obviously in a tier of their own. And then Creighton is obviously a tier of above Seton Hall as well.

So which do you disagree with?

Do you think the Big East is better than the B1G?

Or do you think I was giving him too much credit, and Seton Hall was actually a 4th tier Big East program under him?
