Big Ten Basketball 2022-23 Discussion

NIT traditionally has a .500 requirement right?

They waived that requirement a few years back.

Would M accept an NIT bid? I feel like they wouldn’t.

I don’t think that’s a ā€œruleā€ anymore in the new format but I don’t think it has happened either (I believe there’s a selection committee now).

I would be shocked if they didn’t? It isn’t the CBI. I don’t think many people turn NIT bids down in non-COVID situations. I know a bunch of people did during the COVID year.

I feel like all the notable teams played last year (Florida, OU, Colorado, Miss State, Wash St, Texas A&M, Wake, etc.)

I wanted to recall Beilein saying they wouldn’t, but now that you mention it, he was talking about the CBI/CIT. So yeah, they probably would accept one.

Yeah, the NIT is very different than the CBI, etc. All of the drama will be in the CBI when Antoine Davis is going to set the scoring record in a pseudo tournament in his fifth year though

@BigBoutros will be scrambling to find a way to watch UDM’s CBI games!

Michigan probably needs to go 6-4 at least to make the NIT

Personally I think it’s funny Michigan hasn’t been to the NIT in coming on 2 decades. We paid our NIT penance in the Amaker years so now we’ve been banished

I thought they canned the CBI until I read this thread today.

Yeah, 6-4 with a 1-1 BTT showing gets you to 18-15, which would put Michigan in line with the typical high major that you find in the NIT.

I assume that 6-4 (so 11-9) would push U-M out of Wednesday too, which becomes tricky because then you are much more likely to go 0-1 in the BTT than 1-1.

The tiebreakers between 8-9-10-11-12 are probably going to be fierce.

Who knows though  A lot of basketball left.

The environment at Crisler in 2004 when we beat Hawaii in the quarterfinals of the NIT was the loudest the building got in the entirety of my decade long season tickets (not counting when East Lansing would take over the building).

2004 NIT run was elite. 2006 NIT run was mid. 2007 NIT was grim.

I lived for the NIT growing up. We would only get a handful of Michigan games on Tv back then so I loved it. I’ll never forget the bonkers Notre Dame game, and Renaldo Balkman became my worst enemy after he got away with multiple goaltendings. Unfortunately South Carolina proved to be the true NIT kings that day

Explain please

That team was good enough to get into the NCAA Tournament and it had already won the NIT.

Didn’t feel the same IMO.

Oh yeah for sure. Endlessly disappointing that team crapped its pants at the end of the year. The ND game was wild though

I think the liquid magma hot version of 2016-17 Michigan with flamethrower Derrick Walton Jr would beat all but maybe one or two M teams since JB’s hire

did you know Derrick Walton Jr made 233 career 3s at a 41% clip?

he ROCKS! he rocks BIG TIME!!

I remember being at the opener versus Missouri. That was a great game. That Missouri team with Arthur Johnson and Rickey Paulding was a major disappointment. Those 2 made the Elite 8 as sophomores, 2nd round as juniors and then had a disastrous NIT season as seniors. That team even had Linas Kleiza who was a first round NBA draft pick.
