Big Ten Basketball 2021-22 Discussion

On Howard, I think the reasonable take has to be that how that team is playing reflects on him and seemingly he has not done a good job this year so far coaching the team.

But there is also plenty of time to rebound and we were a 1 seed last year, so he’s obviously not anywhere near a hot seat lol. Every coach sometimes does a bad job. It’s the frequency of those failures / ability to bounce back that determines how good a coach is.

I think Draymond’s conditioning, which was absolutely within the Spartans’ sphere of influence, was a major, major factor. MSU has certainly had well more than their fair share of chunky chunky boys.

Maybe I’m misinterpreting your quote, but I don’t think that’s reasonable at all. If the team is still scuffling two months from now, then it may be a reasonable take.

I think you interpreted it correctly. In my opinion, the team just shouldn’t be this bad right now. Even in reasonable worst case scenario, I don’t think anyone envisioned they’d be performing this poorly (mostly defensively). That has to reflect on the coaching in the preseason to at least some extent, but at the same time this is not that uncommon for teams to disappoint for a period of time and then improve drastically (I’m sure everyone on this board has criticized Izzo for poor stretches of play from MSU). So it’s not worth melting down over yet. We’ll see how the team grows over the next month and a half.

I don’t think we envisioned it, but when you watch the product, it kind of makes sense. The thing that stands out most to me is that the freshmen, while physically gifted to varying degrees, are pretty clueless defensively, especially when it comes to team concepts. It isn’t their fault. You never know what level of defensive knowledge freshmen will bring. That development is simply going to take lots of time, and I won’t be comfortable judging anything in that respect from a coaching standpoint for another couple of months.

Is there any update on the injury to Trent Frazier?

I think people need to look back at what the Big Ten did in early season last year, then look at how they did in the Post Season. And finally, do the same for the Pac 12. I would take a lackluster growing pain filled early season and a final game all day long.

This Gabe Brown auto-bench is going to trigger @umhoops and @eric_shap

Walker-Hoggard-Akins a combined 1-10

14 turnovers for MSU, including 7 from their PGs

9 seconds into the second half and Gabe Brown commits his 3rd. Is he foul prone now?

Wowsers. This board is visceral right now. Where did all the measured, mature basketball connoisseurs go? They lost to Arizona and looked bad doing it. So what? It was their fifth game, they don’t know what their rotation is yet and they haven’t strung two defensive possessions together. Loaded with new pieces, that’s probably to be expected. Relax.

Wait, there is hot seat talk on Juwan Howard?!

I hear that, it is what I appreciated most about this board. I know Reegs had always been slightly dramatic and fired the hottest takes from the hip, but it seems like that subset has grown, or more of the football only casuals signed up.

This is fun when you have the under though

EDIT: Now neither team can miss or they get fouled…

It will pass, I’m sure. Juwan on the hot seat is an all timer for over reaction though. Just ridiculous.
