Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 2)

I agree that there would have been a really big overreaction from Michigan fans but that says more about the Michigan fanbase than anything else imo. It’s really tough to look at these things as black and white issues which is what is going on here. Livers is on record saying the team came out flat and unmotivated against MSU on Sunday. Would that have happened if they hadn’t already celebrating winning the conference? We will never know the answer to that but the bottom line is that Michigan knew the conference would be decided on winning % and that’s how they won it.

I don’t think it’s fair to evaluate what happened when Michigan knew winning % would determine standings and say it would have also happened in a hypothetical rehash of this season using the regular method to determine a winner.

For Hunter, you’d think that at 67’ tall we could drop the 1".

Frankly, the way Illinois has been playing, if they keep doing so with the same intensity and focus, they may be getting two banners down the road this year and I would hope that would sufficiently shut up the fan base. (I can dream.)

I get their ire, but this just isn’t a typical year. It sucks for everyone that it ended in gray territory, but sh*t, we had a season. Above all else, I’m happy for that.

And if U-M ain’t taking home the Natty, I hope it’s a B1G team (MSU and OSU excepted) so that narrative can be put down, too.

“I would bet a lot of money the reaction on social media would be greater if the roles were reversed.”

This is SPOT ON and the lack of self-awareness from Michigan fans drives me nuts. Illinois has a legitimate beef here. Michigan fans look silly when they act like that’s not the case.

Heh, perhaps my lack of self-awareness stems from me only sticking to UMHoops for my forum banter fix. Not saying this forum doesn’t have its… passionate takes, but thanks to its high percentage of educated posters and a moderator who doesn’t let things get too far off the rails, I’m probably seeing an atypical snapshot of the fanbase.

You should try twitter. Tons of well-reasoned, thought out commentary.

EDIT: Even better, try mgoblog

Yeah… I don’t really care what the Twitter takes are. If situations were reversed and MI fans were pissed, it wouldn’t make them right either. IL would likely go 3-0 against that schedule too

Dickinson is Freshman of the Year…

Howard is Coach of the Year…

Rest of awards should roll out over the next few minutes.

Yeah, I’ll pass. Anything that implies I’m a twit for being a member is a no-win situation.

Tough break for Chaundee…

Hard to argue given his performance in Ayo’s absence.

For what it’s worth people who study math and probability would likely vehemently disagree with the assertion that Michigan or Illinois would “likely go 3-0”. I don’t actually know how to use Kenpom or Torvik well enough to run it through there but I’m pretty certain it wouldn’t be much north of 50%.

All the more reason for Chaundee to use that extra year.

Don’t care what the probability stats say, there is a 0% chance Michigan would have lost to NW or IU at home (NW is bad and Michigan owns Archie). So it comes down to PSU

It was like 54% to go 3-0 using if you extrapolated kenpom’s win probabilities for similar games.

I guess you should be finding games that have a 0% chance of one team winning and bet your entire life savings on the money line then!

I mean, I’ll bet UM would be in excess of -1000 ML and double digit favorites in both matchups.

No they wouldn’t.

Perhaps, but like I said before, if we are speaking in hypotheticals then you have to add the MSU game from Sunday in there. If we are retroactively deciding that winning % is not what determines standings you can not just assume that game goes the same way.
