Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 2)

Also, my take of how free transfers are gonna disproportionately benefit bluebloods seems to be panning out

I’ve seen Kentucky fans throw around the rumor that Brooks is going to transfer to IU to play with TJD. I dismissed it when Indiana fans said it but not sure if UK fans have any more concrete knowledge there

I actually put some money down on Kentucky when I heard the Frederick rumors. Not actually picking them to win in reality, but I could see this roster doing something if one more addition (PG) were to arrive.

Ok so what are the starting lineups and matchups for the UK/UM game on Dec 4?

I mean blue bloods disproportionately benefit from recruiting. Of course they get the most sought after players, that’s just how it works. If Kentucky wants you, it’s gonna be hard to say no. No different than how it already works. So I’d argue it’s really not disproportionate

Maybe Toppin-Brooks instead? In any case their final choice at PG will make a huge difference

I guess that’s true it’s not disproportionate. But I believe there was some pushback when I was saying that Kentucky would be able to go out there and take P5 starters away from bad teams enough to upset parity even more.

I just wish the NCAA would pay dudes instead of this

I can only imagine the number of transfers would skyrocket if the players were being paid.

Hmm…I think it depends on what the pay model is. If just pure NIL it is hard to say. If schools had the ability to pay…would they have contracts that had some commitment to them? Would they be structured by the NCAA to be tied to playing time, games, years, academics?

Too hard to know…

There would be little reason not to enter the portal and see what kind of offers you could get, including to stay.

Paying every player the same will never satisfy anyone. It will be too little for the people who think they should get paid based on their worth and/or too much for a lot of the schools. The NCAA is always going to be opposed to players getting compensated for their stats. When I say the NCAA, I really mean the schools. Getting paid based on playing time will definitely lead to a lot more transfers, not to mention issues with team chemistry.

The only way I can see pay not leading to a lot more transfers is to restrict them. I don’t know if that will ever happen. The trend away from that is certainly well established and players obviously have plenty of reasons to transfer without being paid.

Maybe they could restrict transfers of freshman, require players to spend two years at their school or sit out a year as a transfer. But as we’ve seen in the past with those rules, there can be a lot of extenuating circumstances and it won’t be easy enforce a strict rule.

They already get paid. Bringing it above the table would mean the NCAA can have a moral argument when doing other things to restrict player autonomy for the betterment of the game (like not allowing free transfers).

Threw me off with that one. Doh!

Right into the loving arms of some other team’s schizophrenic fan base. I doubt any of them show much remorse. It’s probably up to the fan base to police their own. Luckily, umhoops, though imperfect, is remarkably free of trolls.

Maybe Italian, for Calipari? Misspelled (Famiglia), for Kentucky?

Gonzaga boards are reporting Stephen Gentry to Gonzaga as well. That’s all three Illinois assistants gone at once.

Is there a banner they can hang for that?

Some Illinois insider types are blaming gentry for Coleman’s and Antigua’s departures, supposedly he’s really hard to get along with.

Definitely Gentry and not ya know… moving to a bigger and better program
