Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 2)

Why is that?

As for Wieskamp, considering all that has left the program I have to imagine he’s gonna leave. Unless he just wants to get up 20 shots per game as The Guy.

His transfer alchemy was ahead of its time at ISU but now it’s SOP. Guys like Korie Lucious, Royce White, Chris Babb etc were all seen as misfit toys but now they would be high-major targets. Xavier Johnson is the ideal Hoiberg transfer for example and he wouldn’t give Nebraska a sniff.

His new gimmick seems to be handing scholarships to the brothers of elite recruits and I don’t see that working out too well long term.

Plus he is an ISU grad, never went under .500 there, beloved by all…this Nebraska marriage just feels kind of convenient for both sides. I realize nobody cares about basketball at Nebraska which is good and bad for him in terms of expectations but his first two seasons at ISU were way different competitively than his first two at Nebraska.

Maybe McGowens changes the whole narrative for him, I dunno. Obviously I have been wrong before.

Which NU? Northwestern could be decent if they all just ignore everything Collins says and run their own offense. Nebraska could also be decent if Hoiberg could manage to keep five guys in consecutive seasons.

That Iowa roster looks lean. P-Mac and Keegan Murray are going to be their leading scorers. :grimacing:

I do not want to live in a world where this is a reality.

I gotcha you’re talking talent accumulation. Yeah I can buy that whole argument. He’s a great coach though so if he can get some decent talent they’ll be solid

Looks like I may be able to slip in a partial toldja on Woodson here a little sooner than expected.
I just got a nice vibe from him on the (perennially constipated and woebegone) Knicks, my first boyhood sports love of the Clyde the Glide/Earl the Pearl/Willis Reed years.

Some Illinois panic that their assistant Orlando Antigua is getting poached. He is a great recruiter with a Puerto Rico pipeline (Curbelo, Plummer, Melendez)

Some very unsubstantiated rumors I’ve seen have said he’s going to Kentucky and that Adam Miller may follow.

He was an assistant at UK for a handful of years so it makes sense. Did an assistant from UK already leave?

UK pivoting from Burger Boy U to Transfer U will be interesting to follow

Joel Justus is supposedly the favorite at Radford.

I believe that Antigua allowed Illinois to get Chicago kids to come to Illini so if they lose him, they don’t have anyone who can recruit Chicago area.

He is really their only plus recruiter overall. Chin Coleman is okay and Stephen Gentry has no resume.

They cannot compete with the G-league and have to adapt.

I live in Salt Lake City and have watched Utah/Alfonso Plummer closely the past two years. He’s a good get for Illinois but probably more of a third guard on a team like Illinois. He’s a deadly and streaky shooter both off the bounce and the catch. Only 6-1 but he can make up for lack of height by extending his range really far. He can also attack close outs with a good pull up game and has quickness to get to the rim. His assist rate may be low but that’s probably a product of the role he played. You probably don’t want him as your starting PG but he can handle the ball and make plays for others as a backup 1 or a secondary creator. He’s a shooter first but not just a shooter.

Defense is the question for him, especially going to the big ten. Will be fun to see how his game translates, and if he and Curbelo can mold together with a Puerto Rican style. He’s probably a better shooter than his numbers even indicate (38% last year and 42% the years before) because of his volume, and being the only real deep threat in the Utah backcourt.

interesting, thanks for the scout. I wonder if the FCP lunatic version of Brad Underpants comes back

Maryland ?

meaning Antigua’s next stop? Kentucky is the rumor.

Getting the band back to together

It’s not that his assist rate was low, it’s that it is miniscule. 7.5% as a sophomore and 6.1% as a freshman. If you look at T-rank’s database, it was the lowest assist rate last season of any high major conference player (that played at least 40% of minutes) that was 6’2" or shorter last season. There were only 6 other players under 10.9% for the season. I mean sure some of that is the role he played but it’s not like he is the only shooter in the country. It’s very difficult to be on the court as a guard and have an assist rate that low.
