Because Mike Woodson gives all those IU donors warm fuzzies about the days of Bobby Knight storming the sidelines.
I think the answer is yes.
Yeah I canât get into those anymore after the Brady Hoke intro, crawling on glass etcâŚ
Brady did really love Michigan though. He just wasnât a good coach.
Juwan shedding tears at his initial press conference was a special moment. It felt so right that he was back.
But I think the difference with Woodson is that it seems like he was fine being an NBA lifer, whereas Hoke/Juwan really wanted to get back here.
Saw Jeff Goodman(keep in my mind a notorious hater of these nba hires but well connected) was saying nba folks told him Woodson is a low energy guy. I canât see that working in college.
yes, but it is sweet to see Indiana trying to copy the success of the leader and the best.
There might be something to this. The guys making the decisions might not always be the ones with the best perspective. Thatâs why a lot of colleges hire search firms.
The Matta thing for me feels more like when football coaches like Harbaugh or Saban give an âadminâ position to a recently fired coach. They want the guy around as an advisor and another person to offer input, but the reality is that the role holds little actual day-to-day value. Not to mention that what made Matta successful were a lot of the things he isnât going to be doing in this role - recruiting, game planning, Xs & Os, etc.
If I were an IU fan my opinion would be positive to bring him on board, but skeptical that this relationship is really going to work out well - especially when they hired an older, experienced guy who probably doesnât want to be âmentoredâ by Matta in the first place.
We might never know for sure but if the report was true that Matta was actually going to be the hire at head coach and he failed his physical, it makes the mentor role even weirder.
Iâm guessing Matta holds this position for one year then tries to pass a physical at Xavier or wherever.
Yes, I have to assume that a big part of Mattaâs job is to be the recruiting guru. Nobody better in the Big 10 for a decade.
I think it would definitely help to have someone like him to coordinate the overall recruiting strategy. On the other hand, I donât think he would be allowed to have much actual contact with recruits nor would his role actually help land recruits exactly. But supporting a new staff that will have some lack of experience there can help.
Literally can not have any
I can see how he could help Woodson with the transition, but this could also potentially lead to âtoo many cooks in the kitchenâ issues. Is Matta content to just work a desk job?
Content or notâŚsounds like his health may limit him to that sort of job for the moment. And probably would be excited just to get back into the sport.
Matta canât have contact with recruits but he can facilitate the drop.
Can eat the Smacky D bfasts and save the wrappers.
this is getting a bit silly, why does Woodson need all the babysitters? unless he feels extremely uncomfortable running the program.
I guess Hank Iba is unavailable.
I donât get the big deal? Set him up to succeed by surrounding him with good support staff, especially staff familiar with college athletics considering Woodson has never run a program or even been involved in college athletics outside playing. Kind of like hiring Martelli and somebody like Jay Smith for Juwan.
