Iowa basically has 4 or 5 players on the court at all times whose physical limitations ensure they are below average to terrible individual defenders. They combine that with terrible communication and team defense.

Oh I know, I’ve been beating the anti-Garza train as loud as anyone. I’ve referred to him as the worst defensive center in college basketball before lol. You could still manage a somewhat competent defense even with his limitations if they had some perimeter defenders who could slow down penetration.

May as well press and scramble if you’re Iowa – they’re not going to get better looks than they’re already getting anyway.
Okay I swear I have taken my black and gold colored glasses off now, but I am honestly shocked this isn’t even uglier than it is. Iowa shooting 26% from three and 46% from free throw and it’s not a 30 point blowout yet seems miraculous

I just can’t get behind Garza as the NPOY when he plays the most impactful defensive position and plays it so awful. He gives back so much of his insane offensive value in the other end.

Iowa hasn’t been top half of the conference in defense since they had Adam Woodbury and Peter Jok (2016) and haven’t been better than dead last since the year following that, when they were second to last.
