Big Ten Basketball 2020-21 Discussion (Part 1)

Why not throw it off the backboard?

You have to say, throwing it off the glass from 94 feet away is a pretty impressive athletic feat :joy:

So roughly:

Tier 1: Michigan/Illinois
Tier 2: OSU/Iowa
Tier 3: Wisconsin, Purdue, Rutgers, Indiana
Tier 4: PSU, Minnesota, Maryland, MSU
Tier 5: NW, Nebraska

Could be argued to make Michigan their own tier at the top and Nebraska their own tier at the bottom. Big caveat of no adjustments for SOS.

Iā€™d bump Ohio State into the top tier for now. Michigan comes with the huge caveat that U-M hasnā€™t played OSU, Illinois or Iowa yet.

I couldnā€™t believe Raff said it was a set play.

Thatā€™s fair, I was just putting them into general bins based off the efficiency margins. So Michigan having an efficiency margin ~ 10 points higher than OSU puts them in a higher tier. But yes, in reality OSU belongs in tier 1 with Michigan at this point.

Key stretches of winnable games coming up for Penn State and Minnesota.

Would anyone be shocked if Maryland beats Ohio State tomorrow?

IU needs to beat NW (road), Minnesota, MSU just to get to 8 league wins but feels like theyā€™ll end up in the tournament even with an ugly record.

Itā€™s really going to be a blood bath in the middle of the conference.

Games in College Park so OSUā€™s dodging a bullet there. Easy win when youā€™re not playing road Maryland

correct me if I am wrong but the First Four did not add extra at large bids, it merely accounted for extra conferences getting auto bids.

Tommy Amaker would not have been helped in any way.

I believe there were 34 at larges then. Now there are 36 (37 this year).

No thatā€™s not correct. The expansion to 65 was because of the creation of the Mountain West conference. But the expansion to 68 was 3 new at large bids

I would. OSU is immune to stuff like that

Northwestern says hello.

OSU has lost Northwestern, Minnesota and Purdue x2 this year (including on a Jaden Ivey 3). If anything this is the exact type of game theyā€™ve been losing this year.

35th or better on Torvik 3/4 years before Garza, including top 20 twice.

Too bad itā€™s @ Maryland. Iā€™d like Maryland better if it was on the road.

In all seriousness Maryland matches up well with them. OSU wonā€™t exploit their lack of size. If Scott can neutralize Lidell I really like the matchup. OSU has shown a tendency to give up games like this so yes I think Maryland has a shot

What is less likely?
  • KC Chiefs under 10 points
  • Luka Garza under 10 points

Iā€™d like to change my vote!

I know Iā€™m late to the party on this, but Franā€™s lineups were ridiculous at times. Fredrick is already missing, and there were stretches during which Wieskamp was the only starter and real offensive threat on the floor. Horrible coaching.

when he had Mike Gesell and Adam Woodbury they had some decent defenses, but those were players whoā€™s biggest skill was defense. Now he is playing a bunch of guys that are way better on offense than defense.
