That’s already been covered today
Let’s get this topic back on track. Now, about Harlond Beverly…
I’m interested to see how staff rumors play out tomorrow and through the weekend. Focus today was on the press conference. Tomorrow it goes back to Martelli/Miller/Yaklich/Eisley/etc
Interesting tidbit in the Brendan Quinn story today, to the effect that Simpson and teske asked Manuel to come meet with the players to give them an update, because I guess some of the underclassmen were a bit jittery as the search was ongoing. Seems like a pretty obvious call. One that a grown-up who’s been there before would think of on his own, without requiring the prompting of 21 year olds.
Maybe. But the whole thing was wrapped up in a little over a week. It really wasn’t that long of a search, as much as everyone complained during it. Should the AD be regularly relaying info to the players when nothing is signed yet? I don’t know.
I don’t have strong feelings about Manuel one way or the other. It does feel like some fans are really looking for things to criticize about him. Why, I don’t really see.
IMO theres waaaaaaay too much smoke around Martelli for him not to be one of the hires.
I really want to know who else might be in consideration for the third spot if Eisley isn’t a lock. Does having Martelli make it easier to take NBA guy or the opposite where you need a big time recruiter cause Martelli won’t be blazing the trail.
Assuming Mike Miller
Think he would take both? At this point that is the only other name that has surfaced besides Eisley. Hoping there is a dark horse or two, we haven’t heard about yet.
4 names for 3 spots…Saddi, Martelli, Eisley, Miller. Minimum one odd man out, more if there’s a new name (or 2). Unless, of course, Martelli’s role is special assistant and doesn’t put him on the bench.
Before today I would have thought Coach Haynes would have been a safe “fall back” option if Howard struck out on other coaches.
So I guess I read in to him not being retained as a sign that Michigan is comfortable that it has 2 coach commitments or at least a coach committed who specializes in guard play?
Agreed on Haynes, your probably right that it means the guard coach would be locked up
Yep, same reaction. Wonder why the slow pace of announcements.
It’s really not a slow pace. The process has kind of been in hyperdrive. It’s only been 17 days since Beilein resigned and 7 days since Juwan agreed to the job. Without having a standing coaching staff to import with you, that’s a lot of calls to make and a lot of information to vet in a limited number of hours. Add in a holiday weekend…very possible (probable?) that some candidates were on vacations last weekend which might have delayed ability to have significant conversations about the job. Then, once a decision is made, time for background checks to be finalized and attorneys to iron out the final details of the contract … and candidates to potentially negotiate buyout clauses in their current contracts? And in the context of 7 days, that’s a metric ton of work.
I don’t mean the overall search, I mean that it seems like some guys are already determined, just not announced, and that’s the specific part I’m referring to. Maybe Occam’s razor is that we’re down to a small group but the final decisions haven’t been made, or the background checks.
I just don’t think the complaints about waits are legit. Warde’s job hasn’t been to do any of this in a hurry but to do it well. Same for Juwan now that he is on board.
Ah, gotcha. I wonder on that end if it’s a matter of background checks still being finalized? Final details of contracts being finalized? Buyouts from current contracts being negotiated?
Ex: even if Martelli has verbally agreed, maybe there are discussions about how different coaching titles would impact the terms of his buyout from St Joes? So an extra 36-48 hours to work through that with St Joes? Or after June 1 so he’s eligible to get an extra full month’s buyout from St Joes (again depending on language in the terms of his buyout)?
There are a lot of moving pieces and background checks etc. to finalize before hiring an assistant. Luke Yaklich is all but done to Texas but that deal isn’t official and announced yet, for example.
That being said, Howard just arrived on campus today. I don’t think this process is really moving slowly.
