Assistant Coaching Staff Rumors & Discussion

Uh if OSU lands Haynes that’s a problem regarding Zeb. Zeb’s main recruiter was Haynes and is the one guy on the staff he really knows. Hopefully Haynes doesn’t go to OSU or that will be a thing to keep an eye on.

Belein had the luxury of getting hired almost 2 months earlier, his latest assistant hire happened on May 24th. Juwan doesn’t have that luxury he needs to move fairly quickly to have his staff in place for recruiting this summer it’s already May 30th

The common denominator with that group is that the head coach in each case was John Beilein.

The evaluation period starts June 13. Only two weeks away, but it sounds like he’s pretty far along in filling out his staff.

Isn’t there a connection between Zavier Simpson and his father to Zeb. I would think this would be a plus.

Zavier’s father is Zeb’s grassroots coach.

Theyre cousins or something too, aren’t they?

There’s also a relationship with Zeb and Juwan. i think someone already posted that. highly doubt that Zeb leaves for OSU

If I remember correctly, Beilein was pretty slow to replace Meyer and Donlon, took weeks to bring in Yak and DeAndre

Go look at chezaroo’s post from 8 days ago. there’s a picture of Zeb and a comment about Juwan knowing him since he was a kid.

I wouldn’t call that a relationship. He took a picture with him 3 years ago. That’s like me getting a picture with Lebron if Lebron took the Ohio state job and I was a OSU commit. Decent chance he may not even remember taking the photo. I think people are making too much of that. It was a cool little coincidence from my POV

I get that but they were likely hired by this time for the most part. The other thing is Belein’s program was established so recruiting wasn’t as much of question. Howard needs to get these guys rolling quick recruiting for the 2020 class, it is key to his success here. It’s already a little late in the game, most of these programs have been recruiting these kids for years

Quincy (Zavier’s Dad) has said numerous times he don’t care what Zeb does. I believe he even tweeted something about it after Beilein announced he’s leaving. He’s letting him decide and him alone. By him I mean Zeb and his family. He doesn’t want much input on where Zeb goes.

On the DeAndre Haynes stuff, I am a Warde hater but this is on beilein. He had the leverage to get whatever he wanted for his assistants and knowing he would leave for an nba job he should have negotiated a buyout that covered their salaries for a year until they found work. Lloyd did just that for the fball assistants when he knew he was going retire.

You could say Lloyd’s move there ^ made it harder for RichRod to hire his preferred DC away from WVU and hampered him immediately also.

Lloyd’s guys all should’ve had no problem garnering $100K+ salaries, even back then, without Lloyd stealing money from RichRod’s assistant pool.

I wish that all assistants will be finalized sooner but if it takes time to bring the best one in, I don’t mind waiting another week or two. Hiring an assistant with right connections is much more important than one-week extra time on recruiting trials

Hiring the right assistant a couple weeks later is a far better outcome than hiring the wrong assistant a week early.

Per Brandon Quinn, Zeb’s dad said a week or so ago that Zeb’s commitment to Michigan was firm as long as Juwan was as committed to Zeb as was JB. I don’t think that’s going to be an issue. Zeb could easily and justifiably have re-opened his recruitment in the wake of developments. The fact that he has not done so means, to me, that where DeAndre, or any other former staff member winds up, is of far less importance to him than whether he forms a good relationship with Juwan. If he does, game over.

One other note–as much credit as assistant coaches get as “ace recruiters,” the truth, per conversations with a number of long time DI coaches (all of whom spent substantial time as high major assistants and as DI HCs), is that recruiting success is 80%+ a function of how well the head coach recruits. Guys who were “ace recruiters” for certain head coaches move on and don’t do as well at the next stop, and the reason is simple–assistants can get you in the door, but in the overwhelming majority of cases, the head coach is the closer. In addition, the head coach decides who NOT to recruit.

Seems to me that in fball the assistants lay the groundwork and often close the deal too. In college b-ball it seems to me that assistants lay the groundwork but head coaches close the deal.

You realize it’s very rare for kids or parents to be extremely blunt directly following something unexpected right? The public look if they immediately bash or leave wouldn’t be a great look. Even Jalen Wilson was coy on the matter. Go look at player interviews immediately following coaches leaving, especially unexpected ones. They all more or less say the same things. At the time, Zeb and the family also was hoping/thinking the majority of the assistants may be retained. I was also saying if Ohio State got involved now and got Haynes. OSU was a major player for him before his commitment to Michigan. I didn’t say he was Forsure gone even if they hire Haynes. Just was saying they would be worth keeping a eye on and if he did happen to decommit, that would be a expected landing spot. The last point you have about assistants and head coaches I agree with too. Hopefully Zeb stays but if Howard gets other guys, so be it.
