Assistant Coaching Staff Rumors & Discussion

I don’t think anyone thinks the admin is dying to spend on basketball…I think we’re just wishing they would (to the extent it would help, of course).

You’re not disputing that we have a pile of cash, though, are you?

That one feels like it’s against the ethos of the university. I’d be surprised…but if it’s something that’s important to Juwan, maybe he can get it done, who knows.

I’m pointing out that Michigan has never spent lavishly on basketball and there’s no real reason to think it will start now after making a frugal head coaching hire.

Yes…100% agreed.

In this case regarding a special assistant, I am at least assuming that they’re willing to pay the whole staff what they paid last year, and Howard is making $1.3-1.8M less per year than Beilein. That obv frees up quite a bit of budget.

… I was thinking that JH might have even agreed to a slightly lower salary so that he had more flexibility to pay assistants …

Seems like NBA assistants would be more likely to land an NBA HC gig than a G-League HC, but what do I know. He has a nice resume though. 2013 is recent enough and he has plenty of midwest experience.

Of course, I didn’t say that nor did I mean to imply it. Still, the department at Michigan is large and some staff exist to help out the coaching staff with the college basketball minutia discussed in this thread.

Right, I mean they usually get to an NBA Assistant job, and then an NBA HC job. Nick Nurse for example. Stackhouse went from G-League HC to NBA assistant to Vandy HC.

Fair point.
I like his geographic background. We’ve always recruited Texas pretty hard and he’s got Illinois as well.

Sorry, I could have specified I meant for all athletes, not just the revenue sports, which would be more on brand. Again, no idea the cost or if the record conference payout – perhaps that’s the cash infusion people are talking about, Dylan – is enough to build such a facility. Or if it’s enough to find a donor who wants naming rights to top up the budget for such.

A losing record in 13 seasons as a D1 head coach.

What about that impresses you? I’m underwhelmed to be honest

You know how many coaches in the south land or OVC will have losing records, I’m guessing a large majority

Good thing he’s not gonna be a head coach for us. He was at Texas State and Eastern Illinois, terrible programs. If you guys can’t be happy about a GLeague Coach of The Year with decade of head coaching experience as an assistant than I don’t know what you guys want.

GLeague head coaches are known for being good developers. And they work with college aged kids a lot.

He even got Texas State to 19-9 his last year. They’ve only won more than that twice since then, which is 20 years

If this guy is the 4th assistant (aka special assistant) we need him mostly for his understanding of how to manage a program and perhaps recruiting. Should we expect a former HC with a winning record to join as a special assistant? Those guys are retired and sitting pretty. You’re not going to get a perfect guy for this role. You just have to figure out if he has complementary strengths to help Howard out.

Losing records in conference, not just overall.

No one really says bad things about you when you win an award, but players seem to like him. Intriguing from a player development POV.

From Zak Irvin:

“Coach Mike is one hell of a coach. It was well deserved that he was able to get Coach of the Year last year and he’s done a good job this year as well, especially when roster changes. You never know whose going to be here. He’s able to adapt to that and he’s shown that so far.”

Is he the guy that got Zak Irvin to stop shooting threes?

Probably 2/3 in any given year and it has to be higher over a multi-year period. By contrast, Jordan was the only Big East coach with a losing record this year.
