they can say whatever since Beilein has left … I never believe those hypothetic talks
Beilein’s best class is 2012, by a wide margin.
Yeah, I feel like it’s very easy to say things like that after the fact when there’s no chance of it happening nor really a way to prove it wrong.
He def turned a corner where he was going to land big time guys but I don’t buy all three were coming. Not one bit. Easy to say now that he’s gone.
In the above Rivaks article, AJ Hoggard a PG lists us which is a new target.
247 has us looking at 5 star Kyree Walker who we have been mentioned with awhile ago. He also talked about reclassing to 2019 but not sure where that stands.
247 also interviews Juwan’s son Jace, who says that Juwan ran an AAU program before. Anyone know which program that may have been?
Pretty sure it might be Michigan State on Hoggard:
“Offers have been from Michigan State, Maryland, Marquette, St. John’s and Louisville,” said Hoggard. “It has been the same schools since the open period. All of those schools have been in contact a lot, letting me know they want me.”
That’s what I thought too.
UNC commit DayRon Sharpe said Michigan contacted him at midnight last year. Seems like UNC and Michigan went for damn near every same player when Beilein was there. And Michigan lost like every one smh.
That’s weird, I honestly don’t remember really going up against UNC for anyone,
other than two grad transfers with Cam Johnson and now Pierce. I guess maybe Zeller if we go back that far.
It seems like our highest profile losses were guys like Brunson, Kennard, Leaf, Thornton, Battle, Booker, and Blackmon. (5 stars who at one time or another we seemed to be in really good shape for).
Though I know the team lists on player pages aren’t necessarily comprehensive, I went back through recruiting classes to the 2008 class on 247 and the only UNC commits that I saw with Michigan listed anywhere were Kenny Williams in 2015, Jalek Felton in 2017, and Jeremiah Francis in 2019.
Cole Anthony. Armando Bacot mentioned them as someone he really liked before choosing UNC. That’s 4 or 5 guys just from the 2019 class/Grad Transfers.
Those aren’t super accurate truth be told. It’s just a useful tool. Most high major players have way more offers than what is on rivals and 247.
Seems like a lot of guys who there never was much mutual interest with. Bacot, Sharpe, etc. I wouldn’t really call them head to head losses in that sense? Not sure where you are going with this one.
I’m just saying Beilein liked all the guys Williams does. They have shown interest/targeted lots of the same guys. The UNC appeal clearly has/had a greater pull than what Beilein could offer. Jalen Wilson would’ve been the only one off top of my head that Beilein would’ve won. Just interesting. Shows the types of guys Williams wants as well. The word choice was poor. Shouldn’t have implied head to head.
McGary had solid UNC interest, no? According to the Rivals database he visited officially several days after doing the same at Michigan.
IIRC, though, it felt like more of a Michigan/Duke battle.
There’s going to be some crossover with recruits for basically any major school. Michigan wasn’t even in Cole Anthony’s top 6 when he released that. I can’t find a single article listing Michigan as a contender of any kind with Bacot. Day’Ron Sharpe might’ve been contacted, but again, I can’t find a single place that says Michigan was ever a serious contender. I guess I just don’t see how “vaguely were in some of the same recruitments” equates to Roy directly beating Beilein a bunch. Pierce is really the only head on win that I can think of.
Michigan wasn’t in Cam Johnson’s top list either
Like I said I should’ve worded it better. But it appeared that guys Beilein really wanted were the same guys UNC has targeted just sort of shows that Williams wanted the same caliber of kids. When UNC got involved more times it meant Michigan wasn’t going to get them and Michigan often times didn’t make the final list for those players, like Anthony for example. And now Jonson. It’s funny though cuz they have about polar opposite offensive philosophy. Williams is run n gun. Beilein slow and cerebral. Not sure if it was in this thread but Beilein showing interest in Sharpe and Bacot shows that Beilein did try at least to get more refined bigs. Some people were saying something along the lines of Beilein not targeting more instant impact bigs
I mean, I feel like a lot of guys “mention” Michigan, but we know unless they do the full campus tour and get an official offer, usually it’s just preliminary interest. I feel like Pierce and Johnson are the only guys who fit that, and I can’t even recall if we actually offered Johnson. I never once thought Anthony was coming here, or even remotely close. We didn’t even make his final 7, while Wake Forest did.
As I recall, we did lose Kenny Williams to UNC, and we did offer him.
But the guys I mentioned before are the ones who stand out to be as ones we lost to blue bloods where it seemed like we had a real shot.
Wilson was heavily recruited by UNC before his initial commitment. There are videos on YouTube of Roy Williams being at his games. Michigan actually put the effort in for Cole Anthony as well. They just didn’t make the cut. Idk how hard Michigan pursued Bacot or Sharpe. And Michigan reached out to Sharpe first last year he said as well too so Michigan must’ve been trying to get him hard if they were his first call right at midnight. You don’t waste those first calls at midnight on players you aren’t really interested in. But it must’ve been at least fairly hard because Bacot spoke highly of Michigan and Beilein and I think he said that Michigan would’ve been one of his top options if not UNC. Also Josh Green was recruited heavily by both schools as well. Those are just off the top of my head and from the 2019 or 20 classes. Brandon johns had UNC interest as well in 2018.
He’s not saying there were a lot of competitive head-to-head recruiting battles, he’s saying Beilein and Roy had similar wish lists
