I am pretty surprised with how many people are picking Texas Tech. I think a lot of people are forgetting that Virginia is 34-3 with 2 of those losses to full strength Duke (one of which Duke shot incredible from 3) and one to Florida State. This is the best team in the country and they have shown it all throughout the regular season. Unlike some years, they have legit NBA players, especially someone like Deandre Hunter who will be a top 10 pick. Jerome should find a niche in the NBA as well. Virginia has one of the best offenses in the country and while they have looked shaky at times in the tournament I expect they will put together a full game tonight. As impressive as Texas Tech has been, especially beating MSU with an off night from Culver, I think they are about to run into a brick wall tonight. I expect Hunter to guard Culver as good as anyone and the 2 of them should pretty much cancel each other out but the rest of Virginia’s guys are so much more reliable. As great as Mooney was Friday night I don’t think he can repeat that (I actually go to the same college as his sister and we are good friends) and if Owens isn’t 100 percent that is a huge blow. This is the Virginia team that ran through the ACC like it was nothing. I expect them to win tonight.
I just don’t think UVA is playing at its best this tournament while TT is on fire. But Owens’ status is big.
Yep, there’s no question that Virginia has been a better team over the course of the season, but TT is playing better in the tournament. Agree precisely with the sentiment that Owens is a big deal. It sounds like he’ll play, but that he’ll be limited, and that could be enough to mess with TT’s mojo.
I don’t think Virginia’s defense will surprise TT (re: the “brick wall” comment), who are coming off wins against the KenPom #2, #12, and #9 defenses. Virginia is #5.
Should be fun. I’ve really come to appreciate defensive basketball in the last two years
