2017 Recruiting Notes

When is the Dallas event?

Dallas is right now for adidas circuit and then to Atlanta next weekend.

JB watching Kyle Young

Looks like he had 25&10 last night in a win.

Cain is a 2017 target and all my posts have been about him. LAW is the one constantly taking things off topic.

Deyonta Davis, Austin Davis, etc. arenā€™t though and that isnā€™t really the point. We want this thread to be about updates not long-winded back and forth arguments. There can be other topics for those or you guys can hash out whatever disagreement you have privately. This topic is meant to be a news hub to find new information.

Forgot to mention, it was sort of a double dip for JB as Young (King James) squared off against Brian Bowen (Meanstreets). Good, practical move by JB

Is Brian Bowen a serious target? I thought he was a pretty solid MSU lean.

JB now watching CIA vs Houston Hoops - Danilo Djuricic vs Jay Jay Chandler

If it has to be one or the other, I am definitely hoping we go after Young over Cain.

Working on a post about the scholarship situation more, but with the recent transfers the priorities/focus in 2017 could change a bit. It might have been one or the other previously, but now thereā€™s a bit more room.

That would be ideal, although it doesnā€™t appear that Cainsā€™ handle or play making is a strength of his. Then again, Irvin wasnā€™t a play maker as a freshman so maybe he could develop over time into more of a creator. How many scholarships are currently open for 2017? Thereā€™s one for this year still open, correct?

Cainā€™s handle and playmaking is superior to Young, donā€™t see how that makes sense?

:grinning: WE AGREE!!!

Cain over Young any second of the week.

Regardless, UM will have at least 3 spots to give in '17

Poole, Cain & either a 1 or 4 will fill the class. If we fill a 4, do it carefully because we lead for Brandon Johns in '18. Thats a fact (possibly along with OSU). A lineup of Simpson/Poole/Cain/Johns/Wagner in '18 is a lot of talent mixed with experience.

To clarify, Iā€™m a HUGE fan of Youngs game. But itā€™s silly to base an argument that we need a creator but then proceed to say Young should be prioritized over Jamal.

Hereā€™s my 2 cent - prioritize BOTH.

Irvin graduates after this upcoming season so donā€™t we need a 4 desperately in the 2017 class? Is Duncan thought to be a 4 eventually?

We all know Zak isnā€™t a true 4, JB just played him there. There is absolutely no doubt that the 3 & 4 are the biggest needs in 17 from both a talent and positional standpoint. We need Cain AND Young IMO

You missed the point. We donā€™t need a play maker, Poole and Simpson will do fine. Young looks and plays the more traditional PF spot, so I prefer him over Cain. If Cain was more of a play maker, then maybe going after him harder would be wiser. Having 0 assists and 4 turnovers isnā€™t a great indication of him being a play maker. We need a PF and from what I have seen, Young is the better prospect for that position.

Ok I can see your point then, my apologies. Iā€™ll say this though, coming into the weekend I might have thought Young should be the #1 priority based on similar reasoning as your own, my opinion has been changed based on seeing Cain vs legit comp. Cain might not be a creator for others, but heā€™s EXPONENTIALLY better than Young in terms of creating for himself. There hasnā€™t been a single defender in 2 games that have been able to stay in front of Jamal in Brooklyn. Heā€™s living at the FT line. His combination of size, length, handle and verticality is very nice. Young simply doesnā€™t have that ability. For context, I think Jamal is a much better ball handler vs Zak at the same age.

Here is the thing though, Cain is an excellent rebounder, equal or better than Young so far at Brooklyn based on what Iā€™ve seen without looking at numbers.

So who are we playing at the 3 the next 2-3 years? Chatman (can he contribute?), Dawkins (gone), Irvin (gone in '17) and IMO, Duncan is a backup regardless of position but will play the 4 with Wilson.

Cain is a versatile, athletic wing who can shoot in your own backyard. Priority #1 imo. Can play the 4 in a pinch at 6ā€™7 just was well as Duncan or Irvin did & actually rebounds. Keep Young as a priority, but If theres one spot left, you have to make Cain #1ā€¦imo
