2016 Wing Recruiting (Ibi Watson)

Allright you can just call the staff up and tell them to stop wasting their time then.

Battle to Syracuse. It sucks Michigan had to go through this but there is still time to salvage 2016. It does have to pick up though because I don’t think people really consider Michigan a contender for Bridges.

Yea, i would have liked to have him. But the staff needs to get on Bridges and fast!

Miles has Cleaves, MoPete, Jrich, and Draymond hounding him to go to MSU. If he doesn’t go to Kentucky ( he is a priority recruit for Cal) than he is going to MSU.

I have told them good luck with that one for your information!

Last week Michigan coaches told Ibi Watson's (OH) mother "he is on the cusp." Wolverines offer soon? UM decommit Battle just picked Cuse.

Michigan is the offer he wants, so hopefully if and when they do they like him the best out of what is left. He would probably take it by August. Did JB learn a lesson and be willing to over recruit a spot and take a wing and a PG in addition to an Ibi Watson by being burned by the Battle/Langford thing? Time will tell.

Guess Daddy Battle won out. From a talent standpoint I would of loved Battle back but watching all his flip flopping team (college, high school, AAU) the last few weeks I’m wondering about his commitment and mental strength. Moving on!

The gossip on Bridges is that he hasn’t provided the staff with transcripts etc that they ask every recruit for. And of course he hasn’t visited. I’m glad we continue to get listed, but Bridges most certainly isn’t acting like someone that wants to go to Michigan.

I saw one of his statements before and he said he wanted to be “the guy” wherever he went. I mean, doesn’t that mean we should have a good shot. Basically we want a few elite guys to be the guy mixed in with Chatman, MAAR, and Dawkins etc.

But it is weird that he won’t send his transcripts. Hopefully grades aren’t an issue, because we do have (higher) and different standards in that regard compared to MSU, Kentucky, etc.

As it is a popular question for a lot of folks, Sam has a new Scout post describing the look of the 2016 Wing board after Battle’s commitment to Syracuse. I won’t provide link, but if you are curious, go check it out.

Same names that we’ve been discussing here and on the front page…

I think the fact that Beilein watched Ibi Watson for two names at a relatively under the radar AAU tourney is telling.

I saw some youtube clips of Watson and he looks ok. He can certainly hit the outside shot, not sure he has a lot of quickness. Maybe he gets an offer but there seems to be a wide gap between Watson and Battle. Is there no middle ground between the 2 or is Huerter considered the middle ground?

Yup, basically the same list of names. I will be interested to see if any more shake out this month.

Not a big fan of Watson. It definitely is a drop off from who we had been desiring. Another plan B-C backup plan.

For fairness sake as well, Balas also has a hoops recruiting recap/current status up. Again, mostly the same names we’ve seen before. Man, really hope MSU doesn’t land Winston and Bridges… A class of Winston, Langford, Bridges, and Ward would have to be top 10 if not top 5 nationally… blech.

The fact that Langford could of been here if it wasn’t for Battle’s “I didn’t want someone to take MY scholarship” mentality is what still burns the most. If Sparty ends up with that class it will be even more hurtful. These athletes want to be treated as adults but still act like children, which admitingly they are. But still with the mentality he has shown I wouldn’t be surprised to see Tyus be a bust long term. Now I was excited as hell when he committed but his actions and personality is different after the whole process.

This class is looking like a bust. If Davis reclassifies as some expect him to do so we are sitting with Teske. If we can’t pull in Bridges, which is a longshot, and Winston we are looking at total projects. Not saying Beilein can’t succeed with them but it’s not the pace we should be working at.

And my fear is the Battle experience will have the staff not going hard after the 5 star prospects and looking more for the under the radar guys. The last two cycles have been underwhelming to say the least. If Bacari or Lavall were to succeed Beilein I wonder if the recruiting mentality would continue or alter at all?

I think this is the most salient point as well. How is the recruiting philosophy going to change after this? I liked trying to take a stab at some of the higher touted prospects that showed some interest. My personal guess is Jordan and Bacari may not be as strict to Beilein’s statutes were they to succeed him. However, I hope that’s a discussion we have much further down the line.

Guys, there’s an ocean of gap between “5 star types” and “total projects” / “under the radar guys”, and I’d venture to guess that’s where the attention will settle. That gap includes all the four stars, which the majority of the current roster is comprised of…

Heard lots of talk of how Langford was getting ready to pull the trigger back in May and that Battle caught wind of that and committed early. Does anyone know how Battle found out that Langford was on the verge of committing?

I believe that the dads talked a lot, including the possibility of going to the same school.

Easy way to put it…kids talk. Further reflection on Tyus character and lack of maturity. That said I do still believe it was more his family than him…but definitely lends itself to how he was raised.

I was reading comments on the MLive board and there seemed to be some conversation around rumors of Langford having second thoughts about his MSU commitment.

1.) is there any truth to it or is it just total wishful thinking by fans. I tend to lean more towards wishful thinking.

2.) even though they got Swainiganed wouldn’t it be great for it to happen with Langford if were to come to us.

The way this all supposedly went down is beyond frustrating. It was bad enough when we were finishing second for plan A guy after plan A guy, but this was a case where getting the plan A commitment and it ended up back firing. Hopefully the staff can recover and pull in a Winston and Huerter class, but I am doubtful.
