I feel for Battle, and believe his top choice is M. A damn fine choice too.
Otoh, I would prefer Cumberland at this point. Very good scorer and a 4 year contributor.
You’re entitled to your opinion, but Battle is a significantly better player and is likely a multi-year guy too.
Tyus is still tweeting rocking that Michigan uni
Lol Cumberland is amply worse than Battle. Cumberland gets us to the 2nd rd. with a good supporting cast, while Battle takes us to the final 4. Special player, i hope we get him, bet we will too
Let me be clear, I was not comparing Battle and Cumberland as basketball players. Only stating, at this point, I would gladly take the stability of a Cumberland verbal over the uncertainty, and lack of promise in Battle’s verbal.
I would love to see Battle reaffirm his verbal, though I doubt he will. Too many distractions. I think he wants to be at M, but sometimes parents just don’t understand!
Tyus needs to do the right thing and reaffirm that commitment. I don’t think he realizes how well he fits this team and style. It’s the right move and he will win lots of games. 2016 should be a very strong team for us. Put him in the line up and it’s that much more dangerous. I know these kids are young but flim flamming us like that messes up our recruitment of alternative options. I just hope he sees its a perfect fit, it really is. come to your senses Tyus

I 100% agree with this. I do still think Langford would have been a better overall player, but I think Tyus fits better into the system. It’s very interesting to me that we haven’t hear more on any fronts, Battle or Cumberland.

Give me uncertainty all day over Cumberland, especially when that uncertainty revolves around a player of Battle’s caliber.
I will take whomever doesn’t have a Dad who loves the fame of his son’s recruitment more than his son does. Beilein never gets involved with helicopter parents and handlers. I bet he doesn’t ever do it again.

Gary Battle didn’t come off that way until after the commitment to Michigan. His famous quote was “There are things I have for sale, but one of them is not my son.” Said it was Tyus’ decision. Etc. The reason that Beilein has never had a de-commitment is that he always asks the recruit if he is 100% committed, tells him to take his visits if he has any doubt. He got all the right answers in this case.
Battle changed his picture and stuff on twitter. For me that means he is long gone now.

So Tyus committed to Michigan to make sure no one else took his scholarship and now he possibly could end up at Syracuse who at the moment doesn’t have any scholarships…interesting change of logic.
@cusesigel: First takeaway: Staff believes they’ll be regaining at least one scholarship per year. There will be room for Tyus Battle. #OrangeRecruiting
Yeah, it was a pretty bad thing to do, however, the 2016/2017 team will still be pretty deep and experienced if everyone stays put and Cumberland joins the squad.
As I think back about our fantastic 2012-2013 season, a few things now stand out:
-
The catalyst of that team was obviously Burke, who became a much better player after his freshman year, and also after we surrounded him with better talent.
-
We got somewhat lucky Burke returned - he was very much on the fence after his freshman year.
-
We also got very lucky that Glenn and Mitch came back for a second year, as both would have been first round picks.
-
Going forward, I see this program being sustained by guys who stay 2-3 years at a minimum. Along with the drama of recruiting a kid like Battle is the reality that if things go as well as planned, he might be a one and done player. Heck, like Glenn, this could happen if he averages 10 points a game as a freshman on a really good team.
-
Not only are kids like Battle likely to play 1-2 tops, but as soon as you lose them, that means you again have to decide whether replacing that kid means recruiting another one and done kid. At best, we have landed the occasional five star kid. It’s pretty unlikely we will ever get these kids on a consistent basis.

I’d be happy to add Huerter and Winston to the 2016 class and call it a day. As a freshman, I’m sure Battle will be better than Huerter. When Huerter hits his third year in the program, and Battle is long gone, I’ll take Huerter. Indeed, I’d say a backcourt with juniors Winston and Huerter would be quite outstanding.
I like Arizona’s model of building up their 3-4yr guards like Johnson/McConnell, getting stable 3-4y play out a big like Zeus, and then filling in wings who may be 1-2y guys but not being reliant upon them to do more than give an athletic edge in spurts. If we could construct this within our superior offense (and some of the pieces are there), I think we could sustain a nice period of sprinkling in NBA type wings who will want to join what will hopefully be a consistent SW16/E8 threat, and provide F4 upside. Its nice to be a “hat on the table” for guys like Thornton, Jaylen, etc, but getting that foundational engine running is probably the right first step, and 2015 should provide a good arena to showcase it with Caris leading the charge.
(If its not obvious, i’m really trying to find a silver lining/rationalization out of this less than ideal situation.)
“My whole family just wanted to look at other schools and other options,” Battle explained. “I still really like Michigan a lot. I’m just looking at other schools and other options.”
I think it’s safe at this point and from the context that his family is behind this. If it was truly his decision Tyus would of said HE wanted to look at other schools and options. It’s a shame his family wouldn’t let his decision about his future be his. Speculating but maybe his Dad missed the excitement of being recruited. Perhaps Tyus missed it as well but based on his words I’m guessing it was more his family. If that is the case I will feel bad for Tyus if Michigan was his choice and we move on from him and accept a commitment elsewhere.
There is nothing we could really do different in this situation as Coach Beilein and staff closed the deal. I’ve always stayed positive with regards to recruiting but I’ll admit it is becoming more difficult. Two years ago I looked forward to years of Coach Beilein ahead and I still believe he is an outstanding coach who will develop talent and keep us competitive. With a break here or there on the recruiting front (like Tyus was) I believe he can have as contenders on the Big Ten and National stage. However on a yr to yr contending basis I wonder if a change will be looked at. We have obviously seen the momentum Harbaugh has built with the football program. The question is obviously who would we go get that would put us in any better position out there? There is no obvious Harbaugh type savior on the basketball side of things.

No way. There was never a reporter he wouldn’t talk to to run some quotes out there for or a camera he wouldn’t stand in front of to talk.

This is the truth. I can’t recall the last recruitment where a parent did 3x more interviews than the recruit. I hope that he enjoys struggling at Syracuse in sanction city; he has his parents to thank.
