2016 Wing Recruiting (Ibi Watson)

Ok…once again, I’m on the Devon Daniels bandwagon. I think the biggest question surrounding Daniels is whether he can shoot. This is new film from last week’s UA session - Daniels shows the ability to shoot both off the bounce and catch and shoot. We know he can finish, from the film we’ve seen (including the film below) he can also create off Pnr for himself or teammates. He’s just a really solid player. I’d take him over Cumberland all day irrelevant of rankings.

In terms of point guards, I’d rather have a guy that can run a team and see the game than a guy with highlight crossovers for YouTube mixtapes. Good handles are obviously important and you need guys that can get in the lane, but you need guys that know how to play (when to shoot, see the floor, distribute, shoot from the perimeter).

I’m greedy, I want both…DTJ and Winston to a lesser extent. I think Goodin has the ability to do both, with the added element of finishing himself (which is why I prefer him over Winston). Have to admit I’m guilty of this analysis with almost any player - ‘with 5mins left in close game, can this guy get me a clean look in an isolation situation when the defense had adjusted to the screens an offball movement?’

The NBA has influenced my evaluations strongly

Matt D, I'm sorry brother but most of your evaluations are just sorely inaccurate. He is a scorer who can score any type of way...can't disprove that. He has a good handle... Can't disprove that. A better handle and ball skills then a THJr at the same stage & just as good as MAAR at the same stage. He gets NO elevation in his J, but he is playing well vs decent competition. Bottom line to me is, he's a scorer. A scorer, regardless of how he does it, typically flourishes in JB's system.

Honestly, I think we are just working with completely different standards…if you think THJ had a good handle in HS…then there probably isn’t much for us to discuss because that is just absurd. So to evidence that Vick has a good handle by claiming superiority to THJ in HS is basically shooting your own argument down.

Elite Ballhandlers - DTJ/Corey Sanders

Good/Great Ballhandlers - Winston/Josh Jackson

Above Average/Good Ballhandlers - Josh Langford/Jamal Murray

Average/Above Average Ballhandlers - Tyus Battle (although he may have gotten better, but he’s been injured), Devon Daniels

Average/Below Average Ballhandlers - Damien Jefferson

Vick has NO left hand at all…how the heck can you say he’s a good ballhandler?

First thing I noticed was that Vick did not have much of a left hand, but that said liked the way he attacked the rim.

My favorite NBA PG (aside from Trey) is Steph Curry, so I guess I’m partial to shoot first types but then again I guess you could say Steph creates his fair share of shots for others.

Edit: Can you move this to the other discussion Dylan?

UK in contact with Vick. Hope he ends up there to aid our chances with Langford.

Seems like Langford is pretty high on us, how many visits has he taken, and is he planning on anymore?

Seems like we’re fading with Langford recently, but may be able to get back in it now that Donovan is gone from UF.

Ahh, i just remember reading that he could " check all the boxes" when he visited for the Illinois game. Maybe I should stop believing we have a shot with 5 star recruits

I think we have a shot with 5 star recruits, just not an equal shot if that makes sense. At some point, one of those kids is going to give us a chance though. Hopefully soon.

Yea, I see your point. We get some on campus, so we do have a shot, but seem to strike out. Who knows maybe Battle will really like it on his visit.

I’m really wondering if the staff will change their pitch to Tyus - the staff sees Battle as on off ball player, whereas Battle (IE his Dad) has explicitly stated that he prefers to play with the ball. I’ll tell you what, if I’m JB and company, I find a way to convince the kid that he will have the ball early and often. Other than that, it appears Duke and Syracuse are the frontrunners, with UM likely third.

FWIW worth, I agree with the staff, I see Battle as an offball player from the film I’ve seen.

It seems to me that he is a better creator than anyone else on the team, so I wouldnt mind changing up the recruiting pitch.

I doubt they even need to change the pitch. The ball finds the right spots in JB’s offense. I doubt he thinks Hardaway, Stauskas, and LeVert didn’t see enough of the ball.

If pops wants to hear ‘Tyus is going to have the ball in his hands X % of the time’ and we refuse to concede…then it doesn’t really matter what previous players have done, it rubs off the wrong way. That’s my issue with ‘undersell/overdeliver’…you don’t get the chance to deliver if the sales pitch isn’t adequate enough to get a guy.

@MattD Surprised someone hasn’t snarked at you yet, but for all your Daniels love he isn’t the most bouncy player. Looks skilled though.

Also, I think the tell them whatever they want to hear sales pitch is dishonest. I hate it in industry and I don’t like the idea of it in recruiting. I’ve been on the delivery side of things for years in technology and the salesperson that closes the deal based on vaporware or false promises is just an ass. It’s also bad for business when the promises can’t be or are not met.

Daniels has above average bounce, look at his film. I hate the ‘not fully transparent’ aspect of recruiting too…but on a practical basis in recruiting, what else can you do if you want to remain competitive?

What difference does it make? He’s going to Duke. I don’t want to start paying attention and getting my hopes up. I’d just rather hear that he committed one day and be pleasantly surprised.
