2016/17 Commitment Updates

I could see young liking butler. Something about his game screams butler and possibly Wisconsin. But do we need him

If you are/Iā€™m the #1 recruit in the nation you better show me why I should play for you not make me do the work to get the offer. Everyone else already offered so I donā€™t need Michigan

Please enlighten all of us

LOLā€¦I gave you guys all I could. Have to respect that young man/his family and their privacy with respect to the decision.

haha fair enough. having more information on the situation is only going to add fuel to the fire of dissatisfaction with the programā€™s recruiting. really appreciate all in the insights

Again, let me preface this by saying that I donā€™t agree with this recruiting practice of JB (or a few of his other ones).

But we can at least agree that there is a difference between saying:
(1) youā€™re our #1 priority. An offer is waiting as soon as you visit.
Or
(2) we like your film, but we need to continue evaluating you before we give you an offer.

If Michigan said #1 while putting on the full court press, then I donā€™t think that would be a huge issue. The huge issue, though, is that Michigan doesnā€™t put on the full-court press. If The blue bloods are pulling out all the stops to show the love but Michigan is just lukewarmā€“thatā€™s a bad look.

Visiting the campus of a team you are interested in is not a ā€œhoopā€ when you live nearby. This conversation actually makes me appreciate JBā€™s principles and method of recruitment even more.

Then you must be fine with the recruiting? And he hasnā€™t been in Michigan for 2 years. He might come back in the summer but he goes to school in I think Cali

You can appreciate the principal all you want it just isnā€™t going to get the results I think most people want. In a perfect world this exactly how recruiting should be handled but as we know itā€™s not a perfect world. You better play the game

Well, I am the one who said we should switch to ā€œStarterā€ brand out of principle, rather than pick up a single recruit because they like ā€œNikeā€ or ā€œAdidasā€ or whatever, so that might answer your question. If a local kid sees a required visit as an undue burden, or a sign of anything really, then ā€œsee ya aroundā€ is the correct response in my opinion.

We need less of that thinking. Like I said I actually agree in principal with you but it just wonā€™t work in the recruiting game.

Iā€™m fairly sure JJ wouold have at least visited Umich if offeredā€¦ I hadnā€™t heard his mom was a mich fan like MattD said, but I do know his mom is extremely strict and very involved in his recruitment. This is another one where I see a ton of misinformation floating aroundā€¦ the usual innuendos that heā€™ll take money and all that nonsenseā€¦ this is the cleanest recruitment of a sure fire NBA player that iā€™ve ever had any knowledge of. If any school offered money or illegal stuff, JJā€™s mom wouldnā€™t say another word to them.

Iā€™ve tried to convey this EXACT same thingā€¦not as many ā€˜dirtyā€™ recruitments as folks would like to think. Being real about it, thatā€™s just an excuse in many cases for lack of hard work on the recruiting trail.

Itā€™s probably why MSU is so strongly involved.

I think this is just another example of JB not wanting to be ā€œtoldā€ by a recruit what he should do or shouldnā€™t do on his end. JB is a my way or highway type of guy. I would also say this is probably one of the disadvantages of being a head coach your whole life and never an assistant. As a head coach you make the rules, set the guidelines etcā€¦ As an assistant you can see things through a different prism. Thereā€™s a reason why people have said assistants under Beilein are hamstrung by his rules and this is probably another example.

With the stuff from Sam today, JB saying the shot clock change hurt the offense, Irvin injury being worse than first mentioned. JB is in CYA mode because the criticism is coming because we can all see there cracks in the foundation and it needs to be fixed asap.

Wow. Good luck recruiting with that attitude.

Iā€™m curious - do you guys think there is a fix (for lack of better word) for our problems in landing elite in-state kids - or more specifically, Detroit kids?

As Coach RP mentioned, Izzo has a celebrity-like feel to him that JB simply never will possess. So are we saying that JB isnā€™t trying hard enough and there is hope for some of these kids to come to Michigan? Or is the reality simply that JB will most likely lose to Izzo so he should focus his efforts elsewhere. I honestly donā€™t know, so Iā€™m curious for those of you that have more recruiting insights.

There absolutely is a fix. First allow assistants to recruit the heck out of the city. Next find assistants that are able to do the above. Itā€™s not difficult itā€™s just a lot of hard work

Izzo has darn good assistants that work. They have built the relationships. If Pershing has a kid you better believe MSU will know about it first!

How can we possibly go small next year when 2/3 of the roster will be over 6ā€™8"?

When Michigan was successful people tried to build the narrative that it was ok not to recruit the state of Michigan hard because you can find other kids. MSU starts 4 kids from the state of Michigan, has another one coming in Winston, say what you want Bridges/Jackson are still state of Michigan guys as well. MSU will no doubt be in on guys like Bowen etcā€¦ in the future. Why canā€™t Beilein at least make it tough on Izzo in the state on the recruiting trail?

I think the problem is, we need more guys to play center. Iā€™m not sure 6 is enough for next year.
