True. The task of coaching and holding your team accountable can also be done without the head coach throwing players under the bus in public, especially when said problem starts with that head coach. That is a total lack of professionalism in my opinion.
If we’re going to critique professionalism, let’s apply it equally.
I haven’t looked at it closely, but I doubt we’ve been a top 30 program over the past decade nor the past 4 years. For example, our average Kenpom rank is 48 over the past decade.
Not low IQs from what I’ve seen. More that the effort level, which always matches practice intensity, means practices are played too slowly so they recognize and act late in games. They know what to do, muscle memory isn’t getting them there fast enough.
What’s nice and also frustrating is that we’re probably an NBA stud wing away from being a top big ten team 4-5 seed easy. Really annoying because if it isn’t matthews next year, then 2018 will be a lot like 2017 (barring defensive growth). Which was similar to 2016. Which is stale.
I wouldn’t fire Beilein, he’s had success, the program is clean, we may be stale, but not big picture embarrassing. Discussing retirement after this contract may be something warde does if this year and next end like the last 2.
High school basketball local scouting community is a euphemism - for what, exactly, I’m not sure.
Also, our average kenpom ranking for the last five or six years is between 30 and 35 (with the drag of two years ago at 74), and this year we’re at 33 so it’s not likely to fall much. And as wolverheel points out that doesn’t mean there are 30 teams with better averages.
They also get you players. Many of them mentor kids, it’s a relationship Beilein shouldn’t be scorning. Not hiding cash and favors is one thing, but cold shouldering and closing doors is bad coaching.
Most people at MGOblog wanted Beilein fired last year and are definitely calling for his head right now. Im on record as saying that he has earned this year, but if we’re a bubble team this year, and especially if we fail to make the tournament, I think it’s time to move on from John Beilein.
Aren’t there a lot of people on mgoblog spouting weird things about basketball? It is not as bad but it reminds me of the comments section of mlive in many ways.
In general, I’d say MGOblog has a very educated viewership that has a MUCH higher standard of sports knowledge in relation to other team affiliated blogs
Wasnt limiting it to basketball exclusively, but as a blog viewership/board in general. Just a very informed and well educated base on scheme/nuance.
For the most part I think UM alum/fans tend to be more educated (of course I’m bias) in the finer points of sport.
If you think our fan base is knee-jerk esque, you should try reading an OSU blog for an hour after a FB loss. There were actually people calling for Urban’s head. Now I took great enjoyment from that, but it’s also the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read on a blog.
IMHO, MGoBlog posters are football fan snobs. Many of them know a lot about football, but very few know that much about basketball. It seems fashionable there to bash the basketball program, especially now that the football team has had a couple of winning seasons.
Like I said in my post I’m talking about the last two full seasons and this season. We certainly haven’t been a top 30 program in that time frame. That is a troubling trend for the program considering where we were the three seasons before that.
And looking at the talent on the roster and what is coming in there is by no means any certainty that we will back in that range next year.
I watched Beilein’s post game after PSU. How is criticizing his teams effort “throwing them under the bus?” Is there a D1 coach who hasn’t done that? He didn’t rant about it or trash anyone. You talk about throwing kids under the bus? How about your comments on Davis, who you’ve already declared to be a bust, with a mention that he’s viewed as an “ass” recruit. When someone congratulated Beilein on the fact that he’ll soon have the most wins of any coach in UM history, you’re response was that he’ll also have the most losses. You just can’t give the guy any credit. You’ve set yourself up as a better talent evaluator than Beilein because you are a “scout” and Beilein had some recent misses. You like to compare Beilein to Harbaugh. Well, Harbaugh doesn’t give a rats ass what scouting services say. Neither does Beilein.
