For sure. I don’t think she was necessarily trying to be Dabo Swinney as much as she was probably lamenting more how much coaching has changed because of the portal, NIL, etc. and how time and energy have to be prioritized differently. And I think that’s a fair point.
Having to re-recruit your roster and/or be actively recruiting ahead of the portal opening (at least they fixed the date this year, tampering aside) while trying to make a tournament run…I can’t imagine I’d enjoy any of that. It makes Dusty all the more impressive, honestly.
It also has to be infuriating to grind at recruiting out of high school only to see players transfer before you’ve even had an opportunity to really develop them. I mean, it is what it is at this point, but that has to be exhausting.
I think if you have spent 30 years coaching one way and then things begin to shift massively toward the end of that time, I can understand the desire to call it a career like Jay Wright.
Las comment - was cool to see Jaime Jacquez there in head to toe Bruin stuff to cheer his sister - in the days of the portal it’s rare to see a family as committed to one school, and Jaime was one of my favorite non-Michigan college players of recent vintage
It was clear in the post-game interview how much Gabriela prized the journey of doing this all at one school, and culminating in the title. I’m not against transfer (I enjoy our men obviously), but sort of neat.
USC has 2 5 star international recruits who are each 6’4. Now that depends how quickly they can acclimate themselves but USC in early top 25 is projected 6th overall.
I think I misread an article that said Oldacre was hitting the portal. It was an article about Longhorns in the portal and it mentioned Oldacre but as a departure because her eligiblity is up.
