Iffff we were to look for a coach who would be realistic targets?

Well duh, because he’s first assistant under Smart. :expressionless:

Pointed out on twitter that his son’s going into his senior year at Saline. Maybe he’d had one more year in mind.

But at least the double-agent vibe of that Smart/Yak talk is an amusing sidenote here.

There might be a blog post around somewhere doing recruiting analysis, like they do at MgoBlog fairly regularly, but yeah there’s not a ton of that around.

I’d be cautiously optimistic on Howard but I prefer Yak for the same reason.

We know Yak can coach elite defence (transformed Illinois State, going from 89th to 19th on that end, and us obviously) and he recruited Wilson and seems good at that, think he’s got a way higher floor than Howard.

devil’s advocate… repeating arguement… how come not one team is considering him as an HC?

If Shaka is interested in the Michigan job, it’s a great move. He gets inside info on what it’s like to work here. He gets an opinion to offer on keeping Yak and the other assistants if he gets an interview. It helps him put together his staff faster if he gets the job. He may even gain an advocate on the Michigan side.

All that aside, he needs to hire an assistant at Texas. Yak’s a good candidate.

The teams that would be considering Yaklich for a head coaching job are almost certainly off our radar. Guys just don’t get major conference gigs as their first head coach job.

Jalen Rose just came out with a huge video endorsement of Howard, said Michigan should be going after him as hard as they did Harbaugh.

His argument was purely an emotional one. Not really a rational one. The Harbaugh comp is terrible

Also, defense is one of Shaka’s strengths, at least at VCU, so interviewing a defensive guru like Yak, who has a completely different philosophy, is a curious move

Did you watch it?

First member of Fab 5 to sign and helped recruit the others
Most mature of the bunch
NBA All Star and Championship Winner
Played with the likes of James and Wade
Coached for an organization ran by a Hall of Fame Coach and Executive
Could recruit greater Chicago area

Lot of good points especially if he keeps most if not all of current staff.

Not saying I am making him the offer but surely worth a call and chat.

2020 Adam Miller from Chicago is still uncommitted…

I think there is some consensus here that Juwan could be a great hire.

This is the final reason hiring Shaka makes no sense. If we can retain Yaklich then do not bring in someone who is known for defense which is probably good but worse than we can get from Yaklich.

Shaka only makes sense from a “perceptions” point of view. 80% of casual basketball fans know who Shaka is and know he is supposed to be good. Hiring Shaka is sort of a CYA move, imo. It will be 5 years before the casual basketball fan base will figure out “wow, Shaka, who was supposed to be so good is not that great”. The AD can say 5 years later: “Who knew”?

So is DJ Steward. Plays for Meanstreets. He went off in Indianapolis this weekend. Had a 46 point game winner versus Jaden Hardy’s team. Think he had a 37 point game as well.

I’m pretty sure Texas fans have already figured that out

Not to deride your post too much, but I’m interested–since it mirrors a lot of others–what it’s really based on? If you sit down and listen to the guy, as I had not done before yesterday, you find a person who’s obviously sharp as heck, and very clearly leads with discussion about his players’ schooling. Supreme open respect for the kids and their wider worlds.

Even some of the convo here about how him courting Yak is dumb because he’s already a defensive-minded coach is. . . rather superficial. Why wouldn’t he want to continue to tweak and/or–as an HC–want to have a like-minded person on staff? Some of this analysis is. . . breezy, indeed.

Exactly. Sounds like a football-school approach that could go on for a few more years than it should.

After seeing all these NBA & Michigan guys showing love, my rose tinted glasses are telling me:
Juwan wants the job
Juwan will get the job
Wilson re-commits
Wagner gets another house call in Germany
Wagner commits
Yaklich tells Smart to pack sand
Coach Howard lands a top five 2020 class
